 Local's perspective

I will be staying a week in Port A. in early July. I'm from Houston TX and I am not familiar with the area at all. I am not the typical "tourist". I hate doing the typical tourist thing. I want to know the highlights from a local's perspective. I love the outdoors...hiking, climbing etc. I am fairly athletic and travel with older teens who are up for a challenge...but I also have younger children and older adults with whom I am traveling. I hate a wasted trip with the typical tourist "yayaayaya' experience. Can any one advise me? Thanks....from a 45 year old "Love life/Live life to the extreme MOM in Houston TX>

Hi, Bonelihol. You will love Olympic National Park, and, I am happy to say, it looks like the long delayed snow melt on Hurricane Ridge has begun, so you may even be able to hike a little up there during your visit. First, please take a look at my website, www.kaleberg.com. There are many descriptions of day hikes there, along with tide tables and directions. One thing you should do is visit the Port Angeles Farmers' Market, which is held Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. I hope you will be somewhere with cooking facilities, because we have superb fish, eggs, meat and produce here.

You should choose hikes that show off our three ecosystems: rain forest, mountain, and beach. I always suggest Second Beach, Rialto Beach, the Hoh Rain Forest, and Hurricane Ridge. Also call Adventures through Kayaking (888) 900-3015 and arrange to take one of their wonderful sea kayaking tours. In early July you stand a good chance of seeing a baby seal or two. They have adventure bike tours, too.

Wine is a big thing here. Check the website of Wine on the Waterfront to see what events they may be holding during your visit. There are also several wineries, of varying quality, in or around Port Angeles.

If you see an activity that grabs you on my website, or if you have any specific questions about PA, please write in. I'll also suggest what not to do if you don't want the typical tourist tourist "yayaayaya": make a Twilight pilgrimage to Forks. That phenomenon seems to have peaked here, but it is still the surest path to the old yayaayaya.

Quite frankly, the Pacific Northwest is so filled with natural wonders that you don't see many of what might be called "tourist traps." Even the most popular tourist attractions (like Multnomah Falls in the Columbia Gorge) are popular for what they are, not what some developer promoted them to be. My experiences on the Olympic Peninsula are quite limited (something I hope to expand in coming years), but I can't think of many old yayayaya places (except the Twilight destination already mentioned).

You may run into a crowd at Hurricane Ridge...but that will not detract one iota from the beauty and grandeur of the setting and the view. And, if you do take a hike, you will soon leave most of the crowd behind.

Thank You for your prompt response.

Actually, I have printed the info from the www.kaleberg.com website. There are certainly alot of interesting trails/hikes to look into. I'm really hoping for someone familiar with the area to say HEY LOOK!!! THIS IS WHAT YOU CAN'T MISS!!! I have traveled..Hawaii...Alaska...Rusia..Yosimite, etc....I want to take in the top 5 where ever I go..... I want a bit of the off beaten path experience. If things were ranked.. 1-10....what order would you give my trip to PA....remembering I am a bit of an adventurist......Thank you once again. MOM from Houston

A tough customer, kaleberg. I'll leave you in charge (as usual) on this.

i'm sorry. Not trying to be "tough". I really need input about the area. I've been online and there is so much info to sort through. I'm just trying to narrow things down to get the best experience out of our trip. I really dislike spending alot of money to do the ordinary. Our trip to PA was booked by others in my family.....I Just don't know anything about the area and I am wanting a short list on the top "1-10" from a local's perspective vs. what the tourist industry promotes. ...I just want to maximize the memories and the experience. In my years of travel, I know there are things the "locals" take off and do...that surpass the "yayayayay"tourist thing.....That's all I'm looking for....Again....not trying to be difficult.--

Mom of many...trying to do the best for all!!!!!! But Darnit...I want to climb mountains and see the best

**starts the popcorn**

As a local, and from my perspective, my top 10 includes 1/2 day trips to Home Depot and CostCo in Sequim. Bonus points for grabbing a hamburger at Tootsie's.

Seriously though, locals don't do a lot of sightseeing. The top ten "yayaayaya's" *are* your DON'T MISS IT's.

Keep planning,

chuck.

check this forum post: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60921-i1260-k4341…

also i was going to say don't miss Marymere Falls even though it too attracts lots of tourists, but what the heck, keep going past the falls all the way up the trail to Mount Storm King if you want some climbing!

I am a local. It's really your job to decide what you want to do. There are no "secret things only locals know" out here, except perhaps for the locations of the best native blackberry patches and some good fishing spots on the local rivers. The berries won't be ripe while you are here, and I know a good guide if you want to fish. I think you have the wrong idea of Port Angeles and of ONP in general. It's hardly a tourist mecca. As Oregonpoppa has said, there are no tourist traps here. We are too remote, and too few people visit to make that economically viable. You will be coming to a small town next to one of the last wildernesses left in the US, not Disneyland, or even Port Townsend.

This is the best spot to watch the submarine races:

Now, I'm off to the Magic Kingdom.
