 Harvard intern

Hello from Liverpool, England!

My son is hoping to attend Harvard early in the New Year as an intern at the sports facility of the University. Has anyone got any ideas on what sort of accommodation may be available in the area? He is going to see if he can get acommodation on campus but I was wondering what alternatives there may be. We have no idea of the area I am afraid, research is just beginning! Any information gratefully received, Thanks in anticipation, Angela x

I think his best bet would be to go through the college's accommodation office. Even if he doesn't get on campus housing, they should have listings of students looking to share apartments in the area. Another option would be craigslist.com, which is how many people find apartments or shares now.

Hi Liverpool! I would also ask the people he will end up working with, to help out and try to give him suggestions. You don't mention how long or short the internship is. If it's fairly short, maybe he can stay with adults or families in the area, who have an extra bedroom. If it's long, then I would suggest he try to get a "sublet" which is pretty common around here. That is, he would step into the place of someone who is going to be out of town for a period of time. There is Craigslist, but I wonder if people still list apartments and sublet situations in the weekly newspapers here -- that is how it used to be done, and maybe still worth checking. The "Boston Phoenix" is the main weekly paper, read by many young people.

He should try to stay somewhat near any stop on the Red Line, which is the subway line that goes to Harvard. It would also be OK to be on a bus line that goes to Harvard (there are a bunch of them).

Thank you very much for your help. I have spoken to a lovely man at the Harvard International Dept today and he also gave me some info. He said my son wont get campus accommodation but mentioned campus real estate.

Now trying to sort out visas etc... :-O!!

Thanks again
