 Advice for Texas and beyond

Hey all,

It has been time coming and I am throwing in the towel and resigning from my job. So I have decided to go to the US to backpack by myself and visit family in LA. I am looking for any suggestions for any routes I can take from Dallas.

I intend to arrive to Dallas (from Sydney Australia) at the beginning of March and I want to just go and see a little of the US. Since the US is so big and every state is so different, it would be great if anyone can suggest places to visit so I can get a feel of the US and some route to another destination I can fly to LA from.

About me - I am 28, I like to surf (even though I am not that great), I like to snow board (not that great either), I like interesting random places (I find that is where the best adventures can be found) and I prefer a bar over a club.

Anyway guys, your suggestions and thoughts would be appreciated.

cheers

A

You might want to drive up to Oklahoma City and take Route 66.

I suggest you get a good guidebook such as Lonely Planet USA which is geared to economical travel. Read through it and decide what interests you then develop an itinerary. If you plan on departing the USA from LA, you might work your way in that direction through New Mexico, Arizona and Utah, visiting some of the national parks such as Grand Canyon and Zion. Not exactly random places, but if you'll have a car there are good opportunities to find them out in the desert, e.g. Cliff Dwellers Lodge. http://www.cliffdwellerslodge.com/main/

March is a transitional month in Texas and the southern states. The weather can be gorgeous some days and rainy and cold others. In a normal year, you could count on good conditions in March at many Colorado ski resorts, but I read that snow has been scarce in the Rockies this year. You'll need to check online for the latest updates when you arrive if you want to snowboard.

Hello, LA I'm assuming you're speaking of Los Angeles and not Louisiana, but I'm not certain. Clarify, please.

When you arrive in to the Dallas / Fort Worth area, I recommend you make a stop at the Fort Worth Stockyards, that is a one-of-a-kind, only in Texas destination. Also, I know this is not the forum for this city but I would detour down to Austin, Texas. That is the most Texan city in the state and the "Music Capital of the World".
