Looking at putting a trip together for the Michigan / Alabama game next September. What hotels are recommended near the stadium? The Holiday Inn seems great but not at $280 a night. Any recommendations? Also good restaurant nearby for dinner?

You know you'll be looking in Arlington, right? The Comfort Suites has been recommended several times- think they have had shuttle service to the stadium previously as well. Have you considered doing Priceline or Hotwire? The Sheraton is very nice with a great pool area.
Edited: 14 January 2012, 16:44Now that I am awake and re-reading your post, every hotel chain known to man has hotels in the Arlington Entertainment district (Six Flags/Hurricane Harbor/ Rangers Ballpark/Cowboys Stadium). Some of the hotels contract with a trolley that makes the rounds during vacation season (but NOT to the stadium on event days). It would be worth checking these out just for ease of use in case you want to tour the stadium, see a baseball game, visit Six Flags.

Lincoln Square Shopping Center is fairly close and has several options for restaurants and bars. There is also a free shuttle for the Ballpark and stadium if you spend a certain amount.

If you would like to stay in Fort Worth and enjoy the Sundance Square area (lots of bars/restaurants/entertainment venues withinn walking distance), the Fort Worth t (bus system) runs a shuttle to the stadium for COwboy games and certain college games. You could check with the T and see if they are running for your game.
A small correction. Following thE links from Lincoln Square to "FREE" Cowboy game parking, down to "How does the shittle work", I'm understanding it's $10pp for the shuttle - this in addition to the $40 merchant spending requirement.
The initial link of "FREE" is most misleading.
Thanks for all the great ideas. We are just going to fly in and not rent a car, shuttle to a hotel and hopefully cab/walk to some bars and restaurants in the area. So a hotel in the middle of it all and that has a bar and outside pool area that would be great for hanging out is the perfect choice in Arlington. Ft. Worth seems a bit removed from the buzz of the game but I don't know. Then we would always like to eat some authentic Texas brisket if someone got their favorite spot, any breakfast huevos joints and maybe some good Mexican. Thanks again.
You might want to take another look at Fort Worth, where:
$10 Cowboy game shuttle from downtown.

Sundance Square is just what you described for walking to eats, bars and walking around entertainment. http://www.sundancesquare.com/
Will look to poodle for hotel recs......
If you decide to stay in Arlington, the Sheraton has one of the best pool areas in the metroplex. Lincoln Square has several good bars/restaurants. There aren't a lot of venues close to the stadium yet to really provide pre- or post-game buzz. See links above.
You could check where your team is staying and if there will be a pep rally- that might help with your decision on where to stay.
Which hotel has the better outdoor pool to hang out at, the LaQuinta or the Sheraton by the Cowboys stadium?
The Sheraton. It has a large pool area with an outdoor hot tub. This hotel was built on the site of the old Seven Seas amusement park that had lots of water themed venues. They incorporated part of the park into this pool area. It isn't an olympic size pool or a lazy river but it is a good size with lots of room for chairs and loungers.
thanks, we are looking more for an adult pool versus a "kids area", does the Sheraton still win out in that scenario?
I have stayed many times at the LaQuinta just east of the stadium . It's on the Hwy 360 service road. They will shuttle you to and from the game for free and also free shuttle to local places to eat and party for free. Cowboys Dance Hall is a great evening out.
They have free breakfeast and a bar in the lobby.
Have fun
