Nice pubs and bars for a drink or two in St. Helier

Hiya,

Off to Jersey for my finace's birthday and am looking for advice; I've had a look around the forums and the web but haven't really come across any great advice.

I was trying to work out which were the nicer pubs & bars to go to for a drink or three (not worried about food). I like old fashioned pubs with a bit of atmosphere and it would be nice to know a swanky bar or two in case she fancies wine or a cocktail. It's one of those things that's hard to find out about unless you actually go in and time will be limited; would love to hear what people think!

Thanks,

Ben

Swanky bars, probably the Royal Yacht or the Grand Hotel both in St Helier. Atmospheric pubs, in St Helier probably The Prince of Wales, just behind the meat market or the Cock and Bottle in the Royal Square.

Lots of buzzy places like 'The Bar' on the Waterfront or on a Friday evening after work Bohemia though it can be quieter in the week.

Some pleasant pubs out of town are the Royal in St. Martin or the Rozel Bay in Rozel just near the harbour.

Plenty of good bars in St Aubin, namely The Trafalgar which is just opposite the Parish Hall and a fair selection along the harbourside boardwalk including the Old Court House that was used as Bergerac's local pub in the TV series.

Hello!

For you I would recommend the Pierson and the Cock & Bottle on Royal Square and the Lamplighter & Chambers on Mulcaster Street.

For your good lady I would suggest Rojo on Bond Street, Tanguys on Mulcaster Street and the Royal Yacht/Drift or Wildfire on the Weighbridge.

Good solid pubs for you and nice cocktail bars for her. The Royal Yacht is open until 2, Chambers until 1 and everywhere else between 11 and midnight.

For a quiet night I second the vote for St Aubins for a nice meal and a few drinks. If you're staying in St Helier you can bus, taxi or even walk it.

Bohemia or Rojo in town.

But in my opinion it is nicer drinking in St Aubins Village!

When I was in St Helier a couple of years ago (for my one and only week long visit to Jersey) one area I discovered in St Helier which I fell in love with was Havre des Pas.

This is on the South East of St Hellier, right on the coast, and it is a lovely area.

There is a small "pier" that sticks out to sea, with a man made outdoor swimming pool built alongside it.

Halfway along the pier is a bar / cafe which would certainly be a differant (and romantic) place for a drink. Sitting right on the end of the pier looking out to sea (and back to the coast) would also be romantic.

If you look at a map it may seem a long walk from the town centre, but it is not really. You just walk from the main bus station to Howard Davis park, then turn right down one of the side roads (say St Clements Road) to the sea front. You can also get to it by walking round the "front" route by the harbour and round the headland (this is probably a quicker route)

Havre Des Pas is a fairly quiet area and I guess few visitors go there, but it is full of lovely old buldings (and a few bars and restaurants).

You can read more about it here

btw Right in the centre of St Helier, near the large bus terminus, is Liberation Square.

On this square is the Tourist Information Centre.

They can give advice about things to see and do, and also give you a street map if you want to walk to Havre Des Pas.

They will also have loads of brochures available for places to visit.

I'm afraid that pic is a bit outdated, Guilbert :) There is a new development in that building now, Libery Wharf, and the Tourism office has moved from Liberation Square, it's now at the other side of that 'block', past the Bus Station.

I'd say that the square is a good place to start, though. There's a nice place in there called Mimosa, which is marketed as a Cocktail bar. You have the Royal Yacht nearby, Tanguys just up the street.

There's loads of good bars about though. To be honest, what I tend to do is just wander about until I pass somewhere that has a good vibe!
