Stay in Spearfish to save a buck?

Staying for 1 night. Wanted to stay in Deadwood, but it looks like hotels there jack the rates up on weekends. I can stay for $50 cheaper in Spearfish which is on my way home anyways. Should I bite the bullet and stay in Deadwood or save the $50 and stay in Spearfish.

I'm not a gambler. Just curious to take a look around and linger for an afternoon. I should arrive by 1pm. Could I wander around, see the main sights, have a dinner then drive to Spearfish? How long does the Adams Museum take to go thru?

I think you could probably see what you want to see and head to Spearfish since you are not interested in gambling. The Adams Museum would take about an hour or so. If you tour the house, I'd allocate an additional hour. I liked the house a little better than the museum.

Just a suggestion, but have you checked the neighboring town of Lead for lodging? It would keep you closer to Deadwood if you really wanted to be close by to there that night. The towns literally join each other and are known as SD's "twin cities." Althought it's basic lodging, we have stayed at the Palace Express in Lead, and it was fine for a night. You also have the Golden Hills, which looks nice from the outside, but I think it's a bit more expensive. I have not stayed at Golden Hills. Lead is typically cheaper than Deadwood.

Good luck.

You can easily drive to Spearfish after dinner and an afternoon in Deadwood.

It is a very short drive from Spearfish to Deadwood. I think I'd stay in Spearfish unless my evening in Deadwood included a few drinks, in which case Deadwood is the clear choice.

Well, I stayed in Deadwood at the Bullock hotel as the rates were quite reasonable for a weekend stay. Old hotel but I suppose that adds character. Can't complain for the price I paid.

I'm not a gambler so I questioned if I should have stayed the night there. I'm glad I did stay once but there wasn't much to do for a non-gambler during a winter night, especially when it started to snow.
