Alternative to Minnewaska Lodge or Mohonk

Planning a trip of 6-8 adults to visit Lake Minnewaska and Minnewaska State Park Preserve and do some hiking at Mohonk, maybe some golf at a public course if there is time -- but don't wait to stay at Minnewaska Lodge [three rooms at Minnewaska Lodge would run at least $1200 for 2 nights, which is beyond our budget] or Mohonk [also too expensive]. What are our alternatives? New Paltz maybe? House rental?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

I wanted to add that we are driving up from New York/New Jersey, if that helps. We are all in our 20s and 30s, young and active.

Yes, Mohonk has become rather expensive. We could go to the Caribbean for the prices of a three night stay at Mohonk.

We have been booking a meal at Mohonk giving us access to the grounds and staying at Super 8 located at the thruway exit 18. Nothing fancy, but it's clean & inexpensive.

If you do a search you will find several hotel/motel places not far from Mohonk to choose from.
