Stay at Mohonk vs driving to Vermont and the Equinox resort

I could use some advice. I'm taking my girlfriend for a long weekend in January and plan to drive from Scranton PA to Manchester Vermont. We're going to leave on a thursday night after work and could get there by 11 pm.

I was thinking that instead of driving that late we could stop halfway and stay at the Mohonk Mountain House. I've read that it's a unique place to stay and we would get there early enough for dinner. On their web site they have midweek specials for $140 with dinner and buffet breakfast included.

The drawback is that we would have to leave early in the morning as part of out trip is attending a one day conference at the Equinox Resort in Manchester starting at 10 am. I'm open to any advice. Thank you.

for New York City

First, you need to realize that rate for Mohonk is per PERSON so it's $280 for the night. This is still a bargain as rooms there normally go for $500-600 or more, but it may not be what you wanted to spend. It's really a personal decision I think between you as the driver and your girlfriend as to whether you want to stop midway but then have to leave very early. I would probably be worried about not making it to the conference in time and in Jan., weather can really be a factor.

Monhonk does allow non guests to dine there if you make a reservation, so if you like the idea of making a stop along the way, you could actually go there for dinner (they quote around $67/person for a 4 course dinner including tax and tip) which is an idea. If you find the weather is not good, you can more easily cancel a dinner reservation I think vs. a hotel stay which might have to be canceled 24 hrs. in advance to avoid penalty. Check what cancellation policy on a dinner reservation is.

Cancellation Policy for Mohonk is 96 hours for a Hotel Stay.

Being a 30 year guest of Mohonk, there is a difference between Mohonk & the Equinox.

The typical stay at Mohonk Mountain House starts with Dinner and ends with Lunch (Breakfast included).

Dinner at Mohonk at this time of year starts at 6PM and goes to last seating 8:30 - 8:45PM. Breakfast commences at 8AM. There is an Early Breakfast that starts at about 6:30-7AM in one of the Lower Dining Rooms or Lake Lounge. Early Breakfast consists of Coffees, Cereals, Baked Goods, Juices in sort of a standup & sitdown atmosphere.

Yes, if a theme program is assigned to the time you are staying, you will experience a program assigned to that evening related to the theme/subject of that night. Movies are also shown or just a quiet sitdown by one of the many fireplaces with a good book. Outside activities also involve Ice Skating in the recently build Outdoor Sport Center. Not to forget also the new Spa Building added.

Mohonk is our #1 place to stay. As I have said, we have been going there for several decades.
