If you dont mind parking elsewere and walking a block, almost any of the beaches in town are nice. Most of the beaches, however, require a permit and, unless you are a resident or staying at a hotel, you cannot get one.

I reccomend "Nicks beach". Be prepared to get there by 9am for the best parking. Just make the first right turn when entering the town and make the first (and only) left you can. Look for The Sloppy Tuna on the right and then find parking. If you are running late, you can always park in the South Edison Parking lot located about a block from the Sloppy Tuna. It's legal and free!

Happy tanning!

Unless you're staying in or very near Greenport, a day trip from the North Fork to Montauk will be ENDLESS driving. It will take at least 2 hrs in each direction from Greenport.. Why go so far? The beaches before Montauk have the same sand and the same water. If you're looking for a day at an ocean beach and can go during the week, Sagg Main Beach in Sagaponack (due south of Sag Harbor) is your best/closest option. Parking there is ~ $30 for the day but only on weekdays. Montauk is easily another 30+ minutes east. Here's a map
