We are looking to explore Glacier NP for several days and would love to stay in a nice town closeby. Would anyone recommend Whitefish or Bigfork and which would be better?

We will be staying in both towns in a couple of weeks. I heard both were nice. I'll post when we return.
Thanks! Where are you staying?
I prefer Whitefish as it is larger (but still small) and has more variety of views, loding, food and shopping.
Thank you for your response. Our plans have changed slightly. Now we are to arrive in East Glacier Park via Amtrak, pick up a rental car the next day and take a couple of days to make it to Whitefish.
You can base yourselves out of Whitefish, and take the 45-50 minute drive down to Bigfork to enjoy it for a day, or a part of a day, such as an evening out for dinner and a stroll around the town (can be done in under an hour). Dinner reservations in the summertime are a must....the town gets crowded! (still charming)
Enjoy!
We visited both places and did some shopping. I did not really have a preference for either town. We drove down to Polson also and preferred it over Whitefish or Bigfork. It seemed to be more of an authentic little Montana town. On the way, we saw great views of Flathead lake and cherry orchards. We did not actually stay in Bigfork. We stayed at the Laughing Horse Lodge on Swan Lake. We loved the lodge and the area. I was glad we did not stay in Bigfork because the area around the lake was so peaceful.
