Frankly, I haven't been impressed with any of the BBQ near the airport, so I will just suggest some of the standouts around town.
LC's is not at all well known, but is tops among people who make a point of seeking out KC BBQ. The location is not very handy for your purposes, it is on the east side of Kansas City. The meats are very good and they have huge, fresh cut fries. www.kansastravel.org/kansascitybbq/lcsbbq.htm
Danny Edward's Boulevard BBQ on Southwest Boulevard pushes LC's hard, has a more convenient location, and may be a more comfortable place. The meats have excellent flavor from the rub and smoking - there really was no need to use the sweet sauce. My favorites are the beef brisket and pork ribs. The fresh cut French fries are good and the onion rings are even better. The down side is the limited hours: Monday through Saturday from 11-3.
Oklahoma Joe's is the real up and coming KC place. They have good consistent product and a broader menu than most. The lines can get very long at meal time. There are two locations. The original location shares space with a gas station in Kansas City, Kansas and they have a much larger restaurant in Olathe. www.kansastravel.org/olathe/oklahomajoes.htm
Gates and Arthur Bryant's are the two grand old names in KC. They both are still popular, but I feel there are better places in town. They each have multiple locations. The Bryant's near the Legends in KC, Kansas does a pretty good job, but if I was taking someone from out of town, I would take them to Bryan's original location at 18th & Brooklyn, just east of downtown KC, MO for the great "dive" atmosphere. Huge servings of meat, a paprika based sauce and fresh cut fries cut in lard.
Places with outside seating:
Winslow's KC-Style City Market Barbecue - it is between the downtown and the river and not too bad a drive for you. They may gave live music.
Woodyard Bar-B-Que operates out of an old house in Kansas City, Kansas and most of the seating is on the patio around the pit. The sides are quite limited here.
Jack Stack Barbecue would be in many people's top 10 KC BBQ joints. They have outdoor patios at their Freight House and Country Club Plaza locations. This is the most upscale of the places I have listed.
RJ's Bob-Be-Que Shack has country style cooking, a bigger selection than most and the sides are good & varied. http://www.kansastravel.org/rjsbbqshack.htm
