Hi
We always visit in August, It is busy, but based on other reports I've read it is nowhere near as busy as the main US holidays.
On a scale of 1 to 10 I would say 7.
Best plan is to get to the parks early and use FP as much as possible in the Disney parks.
By mid morning/mid day the wait times for the 4 most popular rides (Forbidden Journey, Toy Story, Test Track, Soarin) will be at least 1 hour and could be considerably more.
For the other popluar rides the wait times will be between 20 minutes and 50 minutes by mid morning. These rides include Tower of Terror, Dragons Challange, R'R coaster, Hulk, Spiderman, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Simpsons, Everest etc.
The wait times for the smaller kids rides in MK can also be long as their capacity for loading/unloading is not as quick. (Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan etc)
The other thing to watch out for in August is it will be hot and humid and you oftern get rain showeres mid afternoon. Often only 20 to 30 minutes but can be longer.
If you read my trip repoprts from last August it will give you an idea of wait times etc.
Hopefully not too long we go 13th Aug !! :)
According to the touring plans calendar, up until Aug. 19th, the crowd levels are either 8, 9, or 10 level every day.
From Aug. 20th through the end of the month, they drop to level 7 and below.
Crowds drop noticeably toward the end of August. We were there this past Aug for 10 days leading up to Labor Day and could tell a big difference. It was very crowded the first couple of days then it was like someone turned on a switch and everyone left.
Great news sunngod, since I am planning the end if August 2013.
We went last August, albeit at the start of August. Get there early and grab a fast pass (so you can ride twice).
The queues weren't that bad early on, but post lunch were a nightmare. Toy Story Mania was backed up for at least 2 hours, other top attractions around an hour max.
Have a great time
Many southern US states have their kids go back to school mid August so we go the last two weeks for that reason as many of the locals are all back in school.
I have been at that time couple of years ago and it was pleasant, there were some rides you could just walk on but some had a 20 min wait. We went to Bush gardens on that trip and all the rides were either walk on or couple of mins wait.
it depends on wether you are staying at WDW resort or not!
we've never stayed on site and the first time we went, didn't know anything about extra magic hours until a sales assistant told us when the fireworks were on at MK. It was extremely busy, had a 2 hr wait for splash mountain becuase we didn't know to plan our time well!
2nd time round, avoided EMH days and was soooo much better! also, a little tip no-one will tell you - you, can use the fast pass ticket at anytime, as long as it is after the time on the ticket!

fishcakes - you can't do that anymore with the fast passes.
