Is Port Richy a nice place for a holiday?

We are thinking of renting a villa and liked Tarpon Springs. But the cost of renting there seems really high. We have found a nice villa in New Port Richy but my husband is a bit nervous as we haven't been there before and the villa seems cheap! We are also looking at Sarasota but again rental seems a lot more there. We stayed in Spring Hill last year which was OK but want to be further south. Help!

NPR will be about the same as Spring Hill I think. It is farther South, but not really South enough to be near the larger, and nicer gulf beaches - Clearwater Beach, St. Pete Beach and places inbetween.

As far as NPR, there are some very nice parts, and some not so great parts of it. But, overall, I think it is a nice little area, somewhat like Spring Hill. Largely a residential, and retail area, but not really a 'touristy, or beachy' destination.

In general, Sarasota is very nice, and will put you closer to some very nice beaches, and touristy areas, but, as you found, can be more expensive because of that.

This was really helpful. Do you know of any areas nearer Sarasota which maybe worth a look - not so pricey . Inland would be fine. We are OK with more suburban places but may as well go back to Springhill as the villa and area was fine.

Thanks again - it is really hard planning a holiday when you are in the west highlands of Scotland!

I'm not really familiar enough with Sarasota to get that specific, sorry. I'm only going over the general info I know of the general Sarasota area. But, the farther inland you go, the less rent should be. Of course, generally speaking.

Check more in the Sarasota forum, or if you haven't, you may want to check www.vrbo.com

Ft. Myers (South of Sarasota) may be somewhere you want to look into. Overall an affordable area, with nice beaches nearby.

Compared to New Port Richey or spring hill, Sarasota is very expensive.

What are you looking for: if it is the fine beaches then yes go further south but keep in mind you could stay in New Port Richey and drive to Clearwater Beach in 40-45 minutes and benefit from much cheaper rates. New Port Richey is also only 15 minutes or so from Tarpon Springs and that would also be easy access..Further, new Port Richey has the beautiful river running through downtown with a very nice park along the river. Many restaurants are close by at remarkably easy on the pocketbook prices.

It sounds to me that price is an issue and if so then go for the deal in New Port Richey.

PM me if you would like more info..I lived and had business in that area for more than 30 years.

We have holidayed in Gulf Harbors, nr New Port Richey for the last three years. We find it a good base to explore the gulf coast. Clearwater 40 mins away, closer still the wonderful Caladesi Inland a beach reached by ferry. Going north from NPR you will find more wildlife parks and nature reserves. Busch Gardens is 50 mins away. Not so touristy as Clearwater, but lots of restuarants and shops. So lots to do during the day, then lovely quiet evenings by the pool. Lots of fishing off the dock for the kids while adults enjoy sunsets and G&Ts.

If you shop around you may be able to find affordable lodging bayside in St. Pete Beach, Treasure Island or Maderia Beach. Futher South I understand Rotunda West is nice, tho never been. Good luck and have a great time.

Also try VRBO 282664 or 239912

If you are looking for a pool home, under 15 mins drive to the nearest beach, at a resaonable cost, have a look at Englewood/Rotonda. Prices are low, but it is pretty far south (between Sarasota and Ft Myers) and it is close to beaches, Venice is 25 mins away, and sarasota 45.

A good location for a winter rental (or in fact any time of year) as it is old style florida.

I live on the Cottee River in New Port Richey. Just minutes to the gulf. We have beautiful down town park and boat rentals available just minutes away. People who visit me can go to the beach for the day by driving 45 minutues south to the Clearwater Beach, 50 minutes to Busch Gardens, Tampa, FL or 2 1/2 hours to world famous Disney World. We also have a small beach 10 minutes away named Green Key Beach, 20 minutes away in Tarpon is Fred Howard Park (beach) in Tarpon Springs, It's nice and right now the weather is unbeliveable. We are 50 minutes from Tampa International Airport. I just spent a long weekend in Key West which is a fantiactic choice as well. Their are do many deals hotels less than 149.00 night etc. You can't go wrong there. Look into KEY WEST as a second option. I going again next week.

Good luck - Some other water front areas near Clearwater are Redington Beach and Indian Rocks Beach - all are situated along Gulf Boulevard running south from Clearwater.
