 January 2010

Hi there. I am taking my wife for a once in a lifetime holiday to Florida. We fly in to Orlando with Virgin on New Year Day and will be stopping somewhere in New Port Richey/Hudson in a house to be allocated on arrival. We had a few queries about logistics but got a lot of help from Trip Advisors over on the Orlando Forum. It was suggested for things to do, that we tried this forum so here goes.

We are not in Florida for the benefit of the Disney Empire but because of the show we have heard that Mother nature pust on. From sunsets to manatees and The Everglades to the Keys.

We have looked at all the commercial sites and have some idea what to do and don't mind travelling or eeven an overnight stay in a motel if necessary.

I would like to know if there is any American grid iron football in the area in January and although we no nothing about it would loke to see a baseball game. Any ideas folks?

We would love a ride on an air boat but not just to go racing off but to have a long look at what is around us. Are there any good captains and places to go?

I was once in Kalimnos, the best sponge dives island in Greece a few years back, I was working there for a couple of weeks and my wife wasn't there... I brought her home a jar of Honey which turned out to be from Kos and I didn't buy her a natural sponge. This will be a good time to make up for it at Tarpon springs i understand. Is it worth the visit?

Sunsets make our hearts race and we get some good ones back at home from our own living room but everyone says the gulf coast is THE place for sunsets. Where locally will we see the best and maybe get a bite to eat in a casual atmosphere.

I am asking a lot I know but this holiday is special for us as it is to celebrate 25 years of wedded bliss and to acknowledge that in the same year we will both reach 50 years of age. Any help in making it special by your recommendations will be much appreciated.

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Clearwater

The NPR/Hudson area is not really an area many tourists stay. It is mainly residential, as it is pretty far from the beaches. The nearest larger, beach area will be Clearwater Beach. It is about an hour to an hour and a half drive from NPR/Hudson.

Although, you will be closer to the Homosassa, and Crystal River area for seeing manatees, and airboat tours.

The Sponge Docks area of Tarpon Springs will be a nice day trip. Alot of Greek flavor there, also some boat tours, and nice shops to browse in.

To see the Everglades, and especially the Keys, will require a night or 4 in hotels along the way. From NPR to Key West is about a 9-10 hour drive, and there are places you will want to stop to see along the way.

Baseball season is over then. Football season will still be going, but, it will be the time of the playoffs, so there is no way to know at this point which teams will be in the playoffs (Playing for the championship ((Super Bowl)) after the 'regular' season), so there is no way to know where they will be playing. But, safe to say there will not be football in Tampa in Jan.

To see the best sunsets, get as close to the beach as possible. On the beach is best, as your view won't be blocked by trees, buildings etc. There is a nightly sunset celebration on Clearwater Beach, with street performers, art vendors etc. www.sunsetsatpier60.com

A couple places on Clearwater Beach to get a bite, and drinks on decks directly on the beach (Great place for sunsets) is Frenchy's Rockaway Grill, and the Palm Pavilion www.frenchysonline.com www.palmpavilion.com .

Sounds like you might more enjoy a 'home base' on, or nearer the beaches than NPR/Hudson, then make day trips around the area. Just something to look into if you would like.

Congrats on your anniversary, and birthdays! Hope it really is a dream trip!

Thanks for the information Mark. Funnily we look forward to being in a residential area because that is what Florida is like for those who live there and when we travel we want to feel at home. We expect to use the car quite a bit to get around and Clearwater seems a good place to go for a few day trips.

I will check out your other recomendations too. Thanks for your help and we are sure that our dream trip will be a reality.
