Macarons are little meringue cookies with creamy fillings that are all over France and I just spotted a shop selling them right near Total Wine... I can hardly wait to go try one ( er... twelve).

A picture speaks a thousand words Look at these beauties and the colors...

My favorite flavor in France was pistachio- but there are unbelievable flavors in France- you all must try one.

Harry.. Jody... are you there... ? This is a serious rival to the croissants at Croissan Time!

Actually CroissanTime does macarons, but I did try one at the new place and it was excellent - so was their chocolate croissant.

Its listed in that link I posted Abby - but it is called Le Macaron- tiny place with just a few tables.between Publix and Total Wine ..I really should have gone in, but I deluded myself into thinking it was too early for a macaron... silly Lulu!

Thinking it would be a great Valentine treat accompanied by some champagne from Total Wine...

All the bakeries in the French town of Chamonix where we were this summer had macarons on display and posters on the Paris Forum talk of them frequently- they don't hold up well to travelling as they are very frail, so folks have bought boxes to bring back to the US and found them in little pieces on arrival. The bakeries we went to made up the cutest boxes with various flavors- so colorful, as you can see in that photo

Posters on the Paris Forum have tried to make them at home ( Whole Foods has the almond flour) but didn't get good results- in spite of the simple recipe you really have to have a knack for it.

Sue will never let me forget how I once managed to serve her a birthday Key Lime Ice Cream Pie that had totally defrosted ( the bartender at Cafe Bluefish stored it in the fridge , not the freezer)... Key Lime Soup anyone?

So, Sue, just for you, just try and find this Peruvian sandwich shop on your next trip - many think they have the best steak sandwich in town ( though I am partial to the pork version )

Good thing with the macarons are gluten free. Yes the little cups are made of egg whites, sugar and almond powder. Most fillings are made with cornstarch or some other starches and not flour, but it is better to check that before buying some for your ceoliacs friends.

Might not be so bad with lactose intolerant people although I would certainly have a lactaid just in case.

I'm thinking it's also important for folks with tree nut allergies to be aware that it is almond flour as the major ingredient in these - as our American macaroons are coconut based- the French macaron is really different .

I don't think there is any milk product in the cookie, but very possibly in the( oh so creamy yummy) filling - or at least some flavors.
