Help - First trip to Australia, need fine tuning :)

Hi,

We're traveling to Cairns/Port Douglas on Feb. 17th. We realize it's the rainy season, but we're aware and have allowed a few extra days in case we have bad weather to be flexible with our activities. I would love some feedback on fine tuning the trip! We have a total of 5 nights to spend in the area. We plan to do snorkel tour to gbr, we love to hike, bike, kayak, very active couple in our 50's.Here's our tentative itinerary:

2/17 Arrive Cairns 8am, rent car, drive to Port Douglas

what should we schedule for arrival day? afternoon hike? stay in cairns and explore, head up to port douglas late in the afternoon? stay in cairns one night, then head up to port douglas early am for gbr tour?

or

2/17-2/20 - Thala Beach Resort for 3 nights or 1 night in cairns to explore, then early depart to port douglas for 2 nights?

then

2/20-drive from port douglas to daintree, stay one night. should we stay in cowbay or go all the way up and stay in cape tribulation? trying to find decent (budget) accommodations up in trib-not much to choose from. i've found cow bay homestay b&b; a little more than we wanted to spend, but has best reviews compared to the rest :)

2/21 spend more time in daintree, drive back to cairns, spend the night in cairnes for early flight to new zealand

I would really, really appreciate some help with this! any special tours, activities you could recommend would also be fabulous-kayaking at cow bay and/or cape tribulation and any hikes to take, snorkel in gbr, etc.

Thanks!

Gayle
