Airfare to Sydney - Dec 2010

We want to travel on Dec 27 from Toronto to Sydney (thank goodness we already have our hotel booked). But we have no idea what to do about airfare.

So is this it? Will airfare only go up from here on in, or is there still a possibility of getting a better price if we hold off a little longer? We understand that it will be summer there then. So we're thinking there may be no reason for airlines to offer a sale for travel that time of year.

between 9th december and mid january prices are at their highest. it is peak travel time world wide. so what u see now for that period, imo, is what u will get. dont think there will be a chance of any last minute sales.

Of course no one can tell for sure if prices will go down or up, however, Christmas week is very busy here for travel. I would not wait too long to book a ticket, and when I do book, I don't look at prices again. That way I'm not too disappointed if they go down.

As Lien said, the prices for flights increase after 9th December - they price hikes seem to go up in stages. For example if you look at the cost of a flight for say mid November, it usually is quite a bit lower than early December.

I would be booking my flight ASAP. IMO, the cost of flights doesn't go down during the peak period - just the opposite in fact. When the cheaper seats sell out, you have no alternative but to buy whatever you can and whatever price they are charging.

As an example, we booked our flights in February this yr, departing 9th Dec and I've just looked up how much the same flights would cost if we booked today - $2,763 more for the two of us !!

I would also suggest maybe look at flying from Toronto to New York (flights were about $300 AUD return when I was there) and seeing what price you can get from there to Sydney. I am looking at heading back to Toronto from Sydney in November this year and that is by far the cheapest option I have found.
