 Alice Spring/Ayers rock

I am visiting Australia in august for only 3 weeks and am wanting to spend time in Sydney and cairns but would also like to visit the red centre. I need advice on whether to go to Darwin and drive down to see the some of the red centre such as Kakadu and Katherine or whether to fly to Alice spring or Ayers rock. Due to the short amount of time i have i am not sure which to do and also which would cost most.

If you are looking for something totally unique I would suggest Central Australia, being Alice Springs and Uluru (ayers rock). You have said you are tight on time, but one option is definitely to try and do both, fly into th centre and travel overland to Darwin. The red centre as you put it is really Alice and ayers, not kakad and Katherine, the are really totally different. As far as cost goes both are on a par s my suggestion is don't try and put on price on either and select on price. I have been to both several times each and would always vote th centre ove the top end.

Hi,

With only 3 weeks you would be best to fly. If you use Qantas you can fly direct to all the destinations you mentioned.

You could hire a car at Ayers Rock & drive to Alice Springs via Kings Canyon this will give you a great insight into the Australian Outback.

Darwin - see Litchfield & Kakadu National Parks

itinerary suggestion -

SYD - 5 days - Ayers Rock (Uluru) - 2 days - drive via kings Canyon - 1 day/night to Alice Springs - 2 days - Darwin - 5 days - Cairns - 5 days - SYD - Fly home.

For additional info on Uluru - read the link below.

The others have said it from the positive perspective, but from the negative: do NOT fly to Darwin and then try and drive to Alice and Uluru from there.

The distances are colossal and driving those distances is largely uninteresting and time-consuming. Fly to the main points of interest and concentrate your effort there.

So, fly into Alice or Uluru and do the local tours from there.
