Cashel Forum: Cashel or Kilkenny

kilkenny would do as far as where to stay and but you can see all three from either location....kilkenny/cashel/cahir is about 56-57 miles, maybe and hour and forty five minutes driving....

unless things have changed you do not have to do a tour of either cashel or cahir....you have to pay an admission but you can walk freely about either place...cashel does offer guided tours but we never take them, we just wander around on our own....at cahir you just walk around at will....both are sooo full of history......

depending on where your next stop is, if you stay in kilkenny you could just spend your first day in and around there, then leave out the next day and maybe see cashel and cahir in route to your next stop.....that might free you up for a day somewhere else you might like to go....that's what i would do but since i don't know where you are going next, i could be wrong....

There is much more choice in accommodation, eating and drinking in Kilkenny than there is in either Cashel or Cahir, which are quite poorly provided in comparison.

It would have to be Kilkenny for us. Beautiful medieval town (officially a city but with a very compact centre). Lots of great sites (castle, cathedral, round tower, merchant's house etc.) in a short walk of each other and then when the sun goes down, lovely restaurants, some of Ireland's nicest pubs (in our opinion) and a wide range of places in which to lay your head. Cashel, on the other hand, is a bit of a quiet spot with not a lot going on other than the Rock. And has been pointed out, Kilkenny is less of a schlep after a long flight and the distinct possibility of jet lag. As Ireland locals we'd be happy to take any opportunity to stay in Kilkenny. We'd never consider staying in Cashel.

If we choose Kilkenny for a two night stay, any thoughts on Abbeylodge B&B or Carriglea B&B? Both appear to be very close to town and both get good reviews. Thanks.
