 Shrouding of Rock of Cashel
Destination Expert   What's this?
for Dublin, New Mexico, Albuquerque, Santa Fe

I will be visiting Ireland in May of 2011 with a friend. On one of the days, we will be driving from Laragh, County Wicklow to Kenmare. One of our planned stops on that day is the Rock of Cashel (which I have seen, but my friend has not).

I understand that the RoC has been significantly shrouded as part of the restoration/protection work there and that this shrouding will last for several years.

My question is how much does this shrouding interfere with the enjoyment and views of the site? If it were just me, I would probably skip it having visiting before. But for my friend, this is probably a once in a lifetime trip.

Any thoughts?

I saw it a couple of months back and the scaffolding does somewhat spoil the view of the rock from the Dublin road ( the old N7) driving into town. However there a several vantage points around the rock, and I;m sure it would be possible to get an unobstructed view from the far side.

Entrance to Cormac's Chapel is buy guided tour only, and this restricts access in the winter months

There is a note to that effect on the official site here:

Thanks soonas,

This is all really helpful. Cormac's Chapel was actually my favorite part of the site when I visited last year in January. Glad to know about the need to take a tour for it now. (We'll be there in May so it should be possible for us.)

Also, thanks for the photo links. I had actually envisioned it to be far worse (it's bad enough as it is, though). We will be travelling around to the back side to make a quick stop at Hore Abbey and then on to Athassel Priory so should get some better views from there.

Given that we'll have Heritage Ireland cards, this is good enough info to keep RoC on the plan for the day!

One of was down in Cashel on Wednesday of last week and a fleeting glance at the Rock from the direction of the Dublin Road might convince the onlooker that Ireland was entering the space race, such was the size of the scaffolding! But as Soonas says, the view from the Tipp side is much better.

We've just looked at the pictures Soonas has posted and to be honest, last Wednesday it's looked worse and was covered in a sort of tarpaulin as well.

Ah, tapl, that was more what I expected!

I suppose we'll still swing on by...we can always shorten our visit if the view is too disappointing! Little cost since we'll already have Heritage Ireland cards.

I DO want to take a brief gander inside Hore Abbey anyways. When I was there last year, it was so filled with water that I couldn't get anywhere inside! And as far as Athassel Priory? The road south from Golden was also too deep with water and I never made it there. Would have drowned my rental car. Wanting to rectify those non-visits!

We were there 3 weeks ago and yes the scaffolding is a bit of a distraction but the Rock is high on my must see sights and the tour is highly informative. The restoration is 1yr into a 5yr conservation project so the ironwork is there for another 4 years.

I still hope to visit this perhaps even with scaffolding around it :)

It still is covered in scaffolding (but only on one side) when I went past as recently as the 16th October. Just in case anyone else was wondering.
