 Sandown holiday from 22nd may2009

Hello Travellers, We are staying at the Ocean hotel, youngest 9 oldest 66!

What are the best attractions to go to besides the beach!

We will be using public transport or walking.

Looking forward to the break and will of course review on my return.

happy holidays to you all.

Shanklin is nearby and has a pretty old part to the village.

Shanklin Chine is well worth a visit:

I think that the very very BEST attraction on the Isle of Wight is Osbourne House - it really makes a great day out, and I bet you will find a bus going there from Sandown:

Blackgang Chine is cheesy fun for all ages:

And Carisbrooke Castle is a must for fans of Moonfleet, and for the youngsters to watch the donkeys working the treadwheel for the well:

Then you have Alum Bay for the Coloured Sands, and a view of the Needles - and that's the 'essence' of the IOW!!

I like all the places Essex Wanderer mentioned. Also Ventnor Botanic gardens are lovely. Children may also like Robin Hill country park and Amazon World. The last of these is a good bet if it pours with rain too, since it's all indoors (and the garden centre next door has a fab cafe).

I recently went with a group of adutls to Dinosaur Isle, which is in Sandown. Even though it's for kids, everyone loved it. They had fossils on display as well as mechanical dinos. They also organise fossil hunting walks on the beach, which sounded good but we didn't have time to do this.

Thank you Akkarin,

I have enough ideas now to keep me going for the time that I am there.

Cheers!
