Cyprus in June 2012 - pre book or be spontaneous?

My Husband and I are travelling to Cyprus in June for 8 days for a little add-on to our trip to Jordan .. we have never been there before and would like to see as much as we can for the 8 days we will be there.

I would like to just rent a car and drive around -and stay at hotels we come across during our travels. But I am concerned that this may be a busy time of year and hotels will be booked up. We want to go both north and south.

Should we just go and deal with the hotel issue when we get there or is it absolutely necessary to pre-book our hotels?

thanks!

Jodie

With the exception of the Agia Napa and Protaras areas finding somewhere to stay in June shouldn’t be a problem.

The east coast has been very popular with Russians the last couple of years and it’s not unusual for many places to be fully booked throughout the summer months. You may still find available rooms but it will require more work or luck on your part.

If you wish to be more relaxed, why not pre-book a hotel in Agia Napa or Protaras to start with and then take things as they come.

Hi Jodie

June is considered "high season" in Cyprus and you may find yourself trawling from place to place for somewhere to stay if you don't pre-book. Also, Cyprus isn't accustomed to independant travellers - the norm here is for travel agents to block book accommodation for the whole season well ahead of time, and many tourists come on a "package" of flight, transfers, hotel, food etc.

Before I moved to Paphos, I came one May for 2 weeks with only the first 3 nights hotel booked, hired a car and took off to explore the island. Hoteliers were very puzzled at my turning up out of the blue looking for a room! It's years ago but I don't think it's much different now.

My advice would be to book ahead. Cyprus is a small island and in 8 days you can probably see all you want to from 3 bases.

Be aware that if you plan to cross to the TRNC in a hire car, you need to make sure that the company you hire from permits this, If you look back through recent posts, you'll find lots of discussion on this topic.

Happy travels!

Hi, I don,t think that you will have a problem finding rooms at that time of year.

what I would do is find yourself somewhere to stay on the Internet for the first night or so. look on.

travelrepublic

lowcostholidays

bookcyprus.com

then before you move on to another town, pre book your room on the net, it will work out cheaper than walking in off the street, plus it will tell you the hotels that have vacancies. Julie

There is rather more to Cyprus than Pathos, Limassol, Larnaca etc which are served by the big firms as if that is all there is. I would suggest looking at places such as Kakopetria, Platres, Omodos, Polis and other similar, OK they are not the big clone hotels that do not vary from country to country but they are there and variable.

June is great time as it is very warm but not the heat and humidity of August and it is not really high season. Try http://www.agrotourism.com.cy/ and http://www.cyprus-travel-secrets.com/ for idea.

For the North the main difficulty is finding a hire car company that will let you take a car across, this is a much discussed topic on the forum.

I do agree that it is worth booking on the net if possible as you usually get cheaper rates than booking direct, I certainly will first try a company like Olympic when I need an overnight stay away from home.

What is the best area to tour? I've never been and can only seem to find flights into Larnaca. Is it easy to do day trips from there? Or is staying in another city a better choice?

The island is fairly small but my preference would be to say Limassol is a good central location for touring, everywhere in the South is within a day trip.
