 Lisbon to Spain

I am going on holiday at the end of February with my girlfriend to travel around Portugal and Spain, but we're having trouble finding a good route to get from Lisbon to El Chorro Alora in Spain.

Car hire dropping off in a different city from pickup is really expensive, the trains all seem to go via Madrid, and I'm having trouble finding bus routes in English!

So, does anyone have any suggestions for the best way to get from Lisbon to El Chorro Alora? Malaga would be an ok alternative! Ideally we'd leave Lisbon on the 27th and arrive in El Chorro Alora/Malaga on the 29th.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Algarve, Faro

There is a direct overnight coach between Lisbon and Malaga, but a murderous 12 hour journey! There is also a daytime run on certain days of the week.

www.alsa.es and it's in English for timetable and on line reservation - advised.

There are no other trains between Portugal and Spain that would be of any help. There is only the one very slow overnight train Lisbon - Madrid and it takes only a couple of hours less to get there than the overnight coach all the way to Malaga.

There are no trains from Lisbon to anywhere south of Madrid eg via Algarve as the Portuguese and Spanish rail networks never met up and have mostly been closed down anyway.

You could consider flying to Seville with TAP - www,flytap.com and taking train or coach from there to Malaga. Expensive but a lot quicker and less wearisome.

I hope that helps.

Wow, thanks!

Unfortunately I just tried the ALSA site but when I try to book the journey and submit my traveller details the site gives me an error. I think its because it wants us to choose our seats but that journey doesn't have numbered seats so we can't choose any!

I've emailed them but may have to get my Spanish speaking flatmate to book them on the phone for me!

Why don't you try to buy the bus ticket while in Lisbon?

There are bus shops by the Oriente train station, plus another international bus shop near Saldanha, as well as ticket windows for Eurolines at the main intercity bus station in Sete-Rios.

Usually the bus never gets full. I was once told by an attendant that if the number of reservations exceds bus capacity, they add another bus to that ride.

Anyway buy ticket in your first day in Lisbon, so as to allow some spare time in between.

Intercentro, bus company has this website - not really good....
