Amsterdam Forum: atmosphere before ajax matches

Hardcore Ajax fans are in the lower tier behind the goal at the opposite end to the away fans. This is the only section of the ground where you'd be ill advised to show your support for United, anywhere else you should be OK.

For big games, the best atmosphere is in the bars around Rembrantplein in the centre and also in the red light area, the Old Sailor is a good venue, also the imaginatively named Red Light Bar, you'll get a few Ajax drinking around here too. By the stadium you have a few bars in the shopping area between Bijlmer train station and the stadium, next to Heineken Music Hall, which are always busy on match days. The Ajax Supporters Home is also very busy, near the training pitch on the way to the ground from the metro stop.

Where would be a nice Bar/pub showing tha Ajax vs Man utd game on the 23rd Feb that normaly locals frequent? Thanks

Over on Wednesday but in the Ajax end (unable to get a ticket due to the measly allocation United received) but don't expect any hassle (unlike the time we went to Rotterdam for the Feyenoord game when the 'Coleman' scored his hat-trick and Bosvelt tried to cripple Denis Irwin). Quite a few of us in the same boat but looking forward to it and I'm sure that The Old Sailor will get the usual visit although I still miss my favourite pub that was knocked down quite a few years ago - The Last Waterhole. 'Happy Hour' from 12.00 to 19.00 with pints of Strongbow served in a pint glass just out of the freezer and then music each night where anyone who fancied a jamming session could just roll up and join in. Sadly missed establishment.

is central station the best place to get a train/bus to the stadium?? might check out that supporters club if non-ajax heads can get in

Catch a standard train (not metro) from Amsterdam Centraal to Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA station, which is next door to the ground. Trains every 15 mins. This is the quickest way to the ground and less crowded than the metro.

As far as I'm aware, anybody can enter the Ajax supporters home, though large groups of away fans wearing colours might not be allowed in.
