 Explore the countryside

Hi everyone,

I'm spending several days in Amsterdam at the end of march and I would really love to see the countryside. I'm no keen on driving and I'm going to rent a bike for my stay.

Is there any possibility to see the nearest fields and villages by bike? Or may be to take a short train ride with the bike?

Where do you recommend to go?

Thanks a lot!

Hi there,

Yes for sure. Closest biking areas are

a) Noord and then Durgerdam area, the dykes following the Y to the locks and then Ysselmeer. Take free ferry from behind central station as a start.

b) Weesp and Muiden/Muiden castle (that time only open in weekends, but both villages themselves are impressive enough). Best is to start from Amstel station, where also I guess bikes are for hire nearby.

c) Amstel river from same station, to Ouderkerk or further; start at one bank and return on other bank.

All the best,

I can recommend http://opencyclemap.org/ for route planning. An easy way to navigate is to just remember the numbers on the map where you want to pass along. It is clearly indicated along the bike paths how to get from one number to the next.

Note that you need a separate train ticket when you want to take your bike in the train.

We rented a scooter just outside of town and were able to put about 50 miles on in a day through the countryside. The small scooters can use the bike trails.

*Some* bike trails. Only the ones with a sign displaying both a bike and a scooter. Not the ones with a sign only displaying a bike, or the signs with the text "fietspad".

Oh, thank you all so much for the explanations and for the welcome =)

I really liked the routes Erik suggests. Especially the first one, because I'd love to see some "big" waters.

What do you think how much time should I leave for that option?

And Math's map is a something! Didn't know about it before and have already shared it with the friends))

As to scooters - thanks a lot for advice, but acctually my point was to do it by bike because I absolutely love cycling.
