Scenic route through Switzerland going to Black Forest

We would like to travel through Switzerland on our way to the Black Forest from Austria near the eastern end of the Bodensee. We enjoy small scenic towns (not heavily populated), mountain and lake views, museums and castles. We have 2 days to spend reaching towns at the south end of the Black Forest.

What route, towns and sights do you recommend seeing?

I should have asked a couple more questions - how long do you like to drive each day? You can get into the mountains from the eastern end of the lake in a few hours - I would suggest you head for the area around Lucerne and spend the night there and then head for the Black Forest towns you are visiting - you'll see some lovely Swiss countryside as well as mountains without going too far out of your way so you will have some time to spend visiting the area as well as driving. You can get lots on information on the Swiss Tourist Board website

myswitzerland.com

I like the driving maps on

Hope this helps.

The landscape along your direct route from Austria to Black Forest isn't too interesting. But if you don't mind a detour and some winding roads then I suggest the following route wich is scenic and varied:

Day 1: First drive through Appenzell area, which is very nice - unspoilt, with soft rolling green hills and some higher mountains, beautiful villages and a rich cultural heritage. Your route could lead you through Heiden, Trogen, Teufen, Waldstatt and St. Peterszell to Wattwil. Then go southwards to Glarus. Landscape changes here and becomes dramatic with high rising mountains, partly snow topped. Drive over Klausenpass, one of the 'real' mountain passes. Descend to Lake of Lucerne and stay for the night in one of the charming villages along the shore, for instance Brunnen.

Day 2: If you like to do a mountain excursion then take the rack railway from Vitznau to Rigi (it's car free) - enjoy the view from there or do a short hike. If you prefer to visit a museum then go to Lucerne and spend some time in the very interesting transport museum. Lucerne is somewhat a hassle with a car, but the museum is outside of the city centre and there is plenty of parking. Then continue to Black Forest on direct way.

And on your way from Luzern to the Schwarzwald, you should go through Schwyz to Einsidelen and visit the amazing Baroque monastery, one of the finest anywhere! From there continue to Schaffhausen and see the Rhine Falls and walk around the wonderful old town before crossing into Germany and heading for the Black Forest.
