Which airport should we fly to for visiting Umbria

Hi, my wife and I visited Tuscany last year flying from Montreal to Paris to Florence, picked up a rental car, drove to and stayed in San Gimignano, and visited many beautiful villages in Tuscany. We would like to do the same for Umbria, for a week or two. It looks like Umbria is mid way between Rome and Florence. Could you suggest whether we should fly to Rome, or Florence, hire a car and then drive to a home base in Umbria. Or should we also fly from Rome/Florence to Perugia to save some driving? We think driving from/to smaller airports, like Florence or Perugia, may be less nerve wrecking than big ones like Rome.

Much appreciated!

We always fly into Rome and then drive or take the train up. Driving is really not that bad - just stay to your right (as the left lane is REALLY just for passing here) and you will be fine. Sometimes it can be more of a hassle trying to get a flight into Perugia....

Also, taking the train depends on where you are staying....if you are out in the countryside, the train might not be your best option.

I always recommend to people who are nervous about driving up to take the train to Foligno, which is the major train station in Umbria (not Perugia) and rent a car from the Avis located there at the station.

Hello Canadians.

Perugia is served by the small Sant'Egidio airport which is connected by Ryanair from London Stanstead. If you don't want to worry about luggage restriction , could fly direct Toronto to Pescara on the east coast (once a week) and drive via Ascoli Piceno and Stop at the first Umbrian village of Castelluccio di Norcia. There could not be a better start.

If not applicable, consider also to land at Bologna and drive via Cesena - Sansepolcro along the E45.

Rome and Florence are a bit closer but driving from the east is relaxing compared to the other side.

Here is the website of Perugia's airport so you can see which flights are available. I doubt you will be able to fly from Rome or Florence

Driving from Rome FCO to Perugia is really easy as you don't go into the city at all and your way North is well indicated.

Another place in Umbria with a good train service from Rome and with car rental near the train station is Orvieto.
