Getting around & best area to stay

How is the best way to get around Florence.

Do you have different modes of public transport.

We are also undecided on the best area to stay.

Would like to be somewhat handy to the station as we will use it a few times between cities. Or maybe if there is public tpt that can take us to the stn if we stay out fro the stn area a bit. But I do know that closer to stations also mean more noise & perhaps less desirable places at which to stay.

Would also like to be handy to restaurants/ deli's/bars without a lot of walking. Appreciate any help

Thx

Florence is very compact and, unless you have mobility problems, you should be able to walk to the station from most of the central hotels.

I don't think you would derive much benefit from staying in the station area, as like for like, I have never found the hotels to be significantly less expensive, and as I said, most hotels are within walking distance. Unlike Rome, where hotels in the Termini area are cheaper and you are in a position to take advantage of being close to the transport hub.

I hope this helps.

Anywhere in the historic centre is fine, you will find that most of the sights are easily accessible on foot.

Thx for the replies. And public transport when required what do you have train, tram bus??

As we wish to do a few day trips out of the city we wanted to be handy or close to public tpt away from your main stn

An area that has been suggested to stay is Ponte Vecchio

But I hear taxi's are relatively cheap anyway.

Within Florence, most of the time, walking is your best mode of transport. The bus works quite well should you want to get up to Piazza Michelangelo or the suburbs. Ponte Vecchio is in central Florence and within reasonable walking distance of the train station.

From the Ponte Vecchio to the train station is 2/3 of a mile or less than 15 minutes on foot.

Listen to what people are telling you: the historic center of Florence is *small*.

Thx Sammyfloyd & I hear u Zerlina. But we are also looking at apartments & a couple of them are a little further out that from reports we will require public tpt. But the apts r only an option we will just weigh up the pros & cons

Well there are plenty of buses from the outskirts into the centre, but the experience of staying in Florence will be very different if you stay outside the historic centre. There are lots of apartments in the historic centre and some are very reasonably priced.

There is terrific bus service in Florence.

The website is at:

www.ataf.net/en/ataf.aspx?idC=2&LN=en-US

There is a button for the English language version on the upper right.

There are tiny electric buses to take you through the tiny streets in the ancient heart of the city, and larger buses to go on the larger streets.

Walking, walking and more walking. There are also buses and taxis. No need to stay near the train station.

Uncletomaso thank you & esp 4 the link which will be most helpful.

Peggypatch just hearing bout lots of noise if in centre & peeps not being able to sleep but now have a list of apts from various web sites & will sort thru them as to our best option but we know for convenience the centre will be the better one.

LBToni walking never was a problem it is a little now the hips & backs r not like they used to be yes knew taxis' were our other option at the end of a day.

Cheers
