“ AutoEurope not price matching for US customers at UK rate ”

I was attempting to book a car from AutoEurope via phone today for a pick-up at Florence airport in May. I was told that they cannot price match the UK rate quoted on the website because I am from the US.

Many posts on this forum suggested they would price match, yet I was quoted the double US rate!! Anyone else have an experience like this or a suggestion? I guess I will book with Hertz or Europcar otherwise, although AutoEurope's UK prices and insurance seemed better.

Why not book online from Autoeurope UK? There's no problem with this, though depending on your bank and card you may pay a foreign exchange transaction fee.

I suppose I should just book online but I notice you must indicate you live in UK or the rates automatically change. Do you think this might cause any problems/extra charges at the counter once I pick up the car with my US id? Maybe it wouldn't matter, as I'd be dealing with the local company at that point?

I book online using the UK site all the time. In fact I have two reservations for an upcoming trip, one in Spain and one in Italy. There is no problem when I pick up the car. I just hand them the voucher and they give me the car. They copy my US driver's license and sometimes ask for my IDP (from AAA).

I checked a couple of days ago and found that autoeurope.it priced the same car for far, far less than autoeurope.uk. I saved another 50 euros by arranging to pick up the car in the city rather than at the airport, but I will drop it off at the airport, which is free.
