 Request for opinion on itinerary

Hi,

I am visiting Switzerland for business from Singapore and plan to take vacation for a week later in Italy in mid march with my wife and son (3+ yrs) (I know it's bit late to plan for a trip in mid march but don't have option). This is my first trip to Italy and I would greatly appreciate if any of you can comment on my itinerary.

Zurich - Venice - by train on day 1 afternoon stay in Venice

Venice - Florence - day 4 morning stay in Florence

Florence - Rome - day 5 - morning stay in Rome

Rome - Zurich - day 7 - morning by train

I am traveling by train primarily to save some money.

I have tried to read through older posts regarding rail passes and staying in Venice Vs Mestre but still have few questions -

1) Whether to stay in Venice or Mestre, considering that I am reaching there by train and plan to use train for ongoing journey to Florence.

2) Is it safe to travel from Venice to Mestre at late evening say 9 pm with family?

3) I read at some of the sites that children age is 4-11, does it mean I will not have to take train ticket for my son who is 3.5 yrs?

4) Is it mandatory to book tickets in advance from website for journey within Italy or I can go to station in Venice and book tickets for my onward journeys? I mean are train always full or I can get seat even at train station on the day of travel?

5) Should I go for Euro rail pass, does it work on Intercity trains as well?

Thanks in advance.

Forget the rail pass; it's cheaper to buy point-to-point tickets. You don't need to buy rail tickets in advance. March is not a busy season and you can get tickets the day of travel.

If you're going to visit Venice then STAY in Venice. Don't hassle with the travel to Mestre. Walking around Venice early in the morning or after dark reveals a wonderful side of the city.

Thanks Sophie8 and Jerryott. I am going to book hotel today itself. Regarding # of days stay at each location, I think I didn't make myself clear, rephrasing it -

Zurich - Venice - by train on day 1 afternoon stay in Venice for next 2 days

Venice - Florence - travel to Florence on 3rd day morning.stay in Florence for remaining half of the day, overnight

Florence - Rome - travel to Rome in morning and stay in Rome for remaining half of the day and next day, proceed to zurich on third day.

My question is, I am staying in Venice for 2.5 days and in Rome for 1.5 day, should I do it other way round i.e. take one day from Venice and increase stay in Rome by 1 day? Any suggestion on this?

So little time anywhere but as much as I love Venice I think you should add to Rome, it is a big City, really I think you should cut back a City on this visit,
