We will be on a cruise stopping for a day and a half in Venice. The cruise line charges $90 per person for 35 min ride & some free time before being taken back to the ship. My questions: would it be better to find another couple & just getting in line at a gondola station? How long are the waits on Monday afternoons in mid July?
Past posters have said the ship arranged gondola rides put 6 of you in a gondola and charge you each $90 =$540/gondola (€410) The going rate in the daytime is €80/40 minutes for the gondola, not per person.
If you want to share with another couple of course you can arrange that beforehand. There are plenty of gondolas both at San Marco and also around the city at various spots. You will have no trouble getting a ride.

The difference that I have heard described (knowing more than one gondolier around Venice) between the 35-40 minutes, is that the "timer" starts upon boarding, and stops once the "taxi driver" (the usage of a gondola, as also indicated in Sophie8's link, is somewhat similar to a limousine) is paid and ready to depart again. So that usually means 30-35 minutes net time for the actual "ride", usually.
