 writing about Carnevale

I will be visiting from from the 16th-22nd. This will be primarily a pleasure trip, but it is also part of an ongoing research project about Carnival traditions around the world.

I always try to interview local people to get a sense of what the celebration means to them personally. If anybody would be willing to meet with me for an informal interview (or at least begin a conversation via phone or online), that would be great.

I'd be particularly interested in speaking to people who grew up with Carnevale (i.e., who were born since it was revived) as well as those who remember the first "new" festivities in the 1980s.

Send me a PM if you'd like to help.

Molte Grazie!

I think most of the people who read this forum are not native Venetians, so J-A-W-P may be disappointed with the response.

Amante sorry - next time ! Just bring your arctic clothing it is very bitter right now infact the children are not going out much at all. Carnival costumes are on inside as it is too cold to be out in the streets with them. It is the wind - the Bora that is the worst bit.

J-A-W-P, I think you can take Rosa's answer as indicative of how many locals feel about the resurrected Carnival: if they can leave, they do; if they can't, they try to grin and bear it.

You should catch a very short flight to Quebec City and go to the Winter Carnaval, which ends tomorrow.

I had a great time last weekend and the locals (hate that word) seem to enjoy it very much. Be forewarned, it never got above -6 C.

cm7872 --

Funny you should mention that. I was originally intending to include Quebec as part of my project. However, it's my understanding that it is not an "authentic" traditional Carnival, i.e., it is not timed to coincide with the beginning of Lent in the catholic liturgical calendar. Of course sometimes it does overlap.

All this talk about the weather is frightening, and I do hope things warm up a little by the time I arrive on Thursday morning. However it does seem that the tempatures are not worse than what we normally expect in the northeastern US in February...although this winter, as you know has been insanely mild. Hopefully, it won't be too much of a shock!

Are you hitting the Viareggio Carnevale celebrations? It is quite large with parades and giant floats.

Cat7115 -- Not this time. It's just a little further afield than I'll be able to go. But I am looking forward to the Carnevale in Verona on Friday.
