Should I ask for the new rate?

Back on January 9th I booked a hotel in Rome for 8 nights in early March. We arrive on March 3rd. Today I looked at the hotel again and noticed that the rate has decreased substantially since we booked. Our 8 nights would now cost about $450 less than when we originally booked, not a trivial amount. Should I email them and ask for the reduced rate?

I would. It can't hurt. I would also have a back up hotel to use in case they refuse. Let them know you're willing to go to another hotel with a better rate if they don't work with you on the price.

Have you paid a deposit msu_mom and have you read their cancellation policy? It could be worth your while cancelling your first booking and booking at the new lower price. If you have paid a hefty deposit or they have a strict cancellation policy and your credit card details, then they kind of have you over a barrell. I agree with dbabe though, it doesn't hurt to ask. A nicely worded email or a polite phone call can't hurt.

I haven't paid a deposit but they do have my credit card information. The cancellation policy is 7 days in advance, so I'm still well within the time frame. It's just a small place with 10 rooms and it appears that six of them are still available for my dates. It looks like they've been lowering the price to try to get bookings. If it was a big place I wouldn't hesitate, but I guess I feel a little funny about it because the place is so small. But that is a lot of money!
