Questions about skiing in Sierra Nevada in Early March 2012

I was wondering about the skiing in Sierra Nevada. I was planning originally to visit Granada for two nights until I discovered the skiing in Sierra Nevade. My husband and I love to ski and was wondering if its worth skipping Grenada to ski for two days instead? Does anyone know how the snow has been this year and if its worth skiing there in early march for two days? Does it make sense to stay in a hotel in Sierra Nevada or somewhere else? Does anyone know about renting ski apparel so we dont have to travel with our big ski suits? Thanks!

The snow at the moment is quite good and I was up there a couple of weeks ago and all of the pistes were open, it was good.

whether or not you want to skip Granada just to go skiing, i would say that depends on what you are looking for. If you are spending time visiting lots of other cities around Spain then maybe it might be good to take a break of sightseeing and go skiing for a couple of days.

However I would say, that you can go skiing in lots of countries, but you can only see the Alhambra in Granada.

I would say that sierra nevada is also more suited to beginner / intermediate skiers, it does not have so much vareity as other resorts have for advanced skiers.

oh and sorry, there are plenty of shops where you can rent all the gear when you are there, boots and skis you can rent for approx €15 a day.

Thank you! Do you think if we only ski for one day we should stay in Sierra Nevada the night before? Is there a town in Sierra Nevada with restaurants and stuff? Would it take alot of time in the morning to catch a bus from Grenada to Sierra Nevada, go to the rental shops, and get tickets..it seems like half the day would be gone if we did it that way? Is there other skiing in the Madrid or southern spain area that may be more of a challenge?

Thanks for your help!

Yes,

I think that is quite a good idea to stay the night before. Yes, there is quite a lively town there, the actual name of the town is Padrollano, but usually it is just refferred to as Sierra Nevada. There are many restaurants and quite a few hotels (just make sure that the hotel you are looking at is actually in Padrollano and not in a different nearby village).

If you were to catch a bus in the morning, the first bus leaves at 8am and arrives in the resort at 9am. If you give yourself half an hour for ski hire (although this can also be done in Granada before you get the bus) and half an hour to buy tickets you can easily be on the slopes by 10am.

No there is most certainly not any other skiing in Madrid or southern Spain that may be more of a challenge, when I mentioned that above I was reffering more to the Alpine resorts in France/Austria/Switzerland. For one day there is plenty of slopes (about 100km of pistes)

You may find the following website of interest.

http://en.sierranevada.es/

Also search under Sol y Nieve for accommodation in the resort centre - can highly recommend the Hotel Melia Sol y Nieve.

Oh - and for live webcam pictures of the ski slopes go to www.malagaweather.com and click on the Siera Nevada ad half way down the righthand side of the page.

Thanks for all of the great information! One more question...Do the buses run from Granada to Sierra Nevada only in the morning, or all day? I am taking a train from Seville to Granada so I wont be heading to Sierra Nevade unitl later that afternoon. Thanks!

I did find a bus schedule and find there is a 5:00pm bus out of Grenada to Sierra Nevada on the day I arrive from Seville. With that being said I have two questions I am hoping someone can answer:

1. I am arriving into Granada by train at 10:18 am. I cant catch the bus to Sierra Nevada until 5:00pm. I was thinking of checking my bags at the train station and going to the Alahambra. Do you think I would have enough time to get there, see it, go pick my bags up at the train station, and catch the 5:00 bus to Sierra Nevada? Is the bus station near the train station?

2. The day I leave out of Sierra Nevada I am catching the 9:00 am bus back to Grenada. Once I arrive in Grenada I then need to transfer to the airport to catch a 1:45 flight. Will I have enough time with all of the public transport? Is there a bus that goes to the airport from the same station I will be arriving into from Sierra Nevada? Is a bus the best way to get to the Grenada airport?

Thanks so much!!!

On a different note...with all of the transfering around, do you think it could make more sense to just rent a car?

I just returned from 4 days skiing in Sierra Nevada yesterday - the snow was great although a small number of runs appear to have closed due to lack of cover in places. Seemed strange for February as skiing normally goes on until April / May.

We hired a car and drove from Malaga....there is ample underground car parking in Sierra Nevada. Also, try www.britishskicenter.co.uk for webcams and other information.
