The problem is definitely credit card related.

Visa Electron cards and American Express tend to cause problems.

Alternatively, if you do not get tickets in advance, you should be able to buy them at most hotels once you arrive to Granada, since all hotels have a certain number of tickets allocated for visitors staying over in Granada. The hotel should be able to arrange them for you.

It seems like the site to buy Alhambra tickets is similar to the Renfe site for purchasing train tickets. I had to use the same card I did on Renfe, which was a Verified by Visa card. I also had to contact my credit card company prior to purchasing, letting them know I was buying on a foreign site so they would not decline the transaction to prevent fraud. I've found that Chase Visa cards are supported by Verified by Visa, but my Capitol One Visa was not.

I had similar trouble trying to book tickets last weekend, their server is very slow and it keeps timing out. When I tried on Tue it went straight through it might just be too busy on weekends for the server to cope. Once you've booked your tickets don't forget to take the email confirmation with you as you'll need the booking ref to get your tickets from the machine at the Alhambra. Though many hotels will be able to get tickets for you once you arrive they generally need a days notice.

Yes, I just tried to buy Alhambra tickets with my AMEX and got the - 666.0000- message. I switched to a VISA card and it worked fine. Another weird thing about buying tickets is that it INSISTS you fill in your middle name, which is a problem for people like me who don't have a middle name! I just put the word none in there to get around it (I originally put n/a but it didn't like the / ).

Question - do you need to enter a credit card PIN when you retrieve your tickets from the machines? Seeing mixed messages on that - I don't have/remember my credit card pin so I'd need to get one before I go.

Just put your surname twice if you have no middle name so it still matches your passport.

The servicaxia help page steps to take for collecting tickets:

Enter the card with which you made the purchase into the machine.

Select the “Show tickets” option on the terminal screen (on the upper part of the screen)

Select the “Ticket collection” option.

Select the tickets you want to print (all the tickets pending collection will be shown, but you can print only the ones you want).

Collect the printed tickets from the terminal.
