 Help in itinerary

Hi,

I planning a trip to Bavaria starting in the last week for april for around 12-15 days. I will be coming in from Dubai and arriving in Munich on the 27th of April. Ive already booked a stay in Munich 4 nights.

I will be travelling with my wife to celebrate our first anniversary. We need an itinerary to travel around bavaria, munich, fussen, salzburg et al. We are more interested in scenic views of the alps (considering the fact that we are coming from a desert :P) but we dont know what towns to visit/stay.

Are you planning to rent a car, or will you rely on public transportation? The train/bus system in Germany is excellent for getting to the major and even smaller towns, but the small villages are not well served by trains or buses.

There are many Alpine resorts you can reach by train from Munich. And around these places there are mostly also good bus services. What does not really exist is long distance transport along the Alps in east-west direction (the valley are mostly in north-south direction).

I travelled to that same region in May 2010 for 2 weeks and in was either raining, misting, or just low cloud cover the entire time. We went to Neuschwanstein Castle and it was so foggy you could not see the castle standing 100 feet away from it. The weather was cool the entire time we were there. We drove from Fussen to Salzburg on the German Alpine Road - (Deutsche Alpenstrasse). We never saw the mountains because the cloud cover was so low. I'd highly recommend a trip to Salzburg on your stay. Wherever you go, be prepared for the weather.

Why wouldn't it? My former Saudi Arabian license always worked. You can get an International Driver's Permit from a travel agent which along with your actual UAE license should allow you to drive anywhere in the world.

Thanks Abalada. I will look into the resorts tonight.

@VinemontCarl, thats very strange and something i didnt know. I specifically chose the dates after having a look at pics other travelers and TA members had taken during April May. Do you think i should change my time of visit?

@marcopolko: i will look into the international driving license. I would rather prefer the Public Transport, so that i can enjoy the view/sleep while traveling than be concentrating on the driving.

Would you guys suggest a couple of nights in Garmisch-Partenkirchen?

How long do you think i should stay in salzburg? Are there any other places i shouldnt miss out on?

We were going to go to the top of Zugspitze while in Garmisch-Partenkirchen but change our minds when we got there because of the cloud cover. I found an online webcam on Zugspitze while there and it just looked like nothing but a fogbank. I wouldn't go to Fussen, Garmisch, Mittenwald, Oberammergau, etc. at that time of year if seeing the Bavarian Alps was your goal. Starting the end of June through summer would be better for that.

2010 was rather unusual. A very warm, sunny and dry spring. Only in May finally the rain arrived. More normal is a mix of rainy and sunny weather. If you look at the pics of this area and how green it is, it should be clear that no rain for weeks is not normal for this region.

There is no guarantee either. July and August are usually warm if not hot. But on average the months with the most rainfall in Germany.
