 deciding between two hotels

Hi everyone,

We will be spending just one night in Dublin in May, coming in by car on the ferry in the afternoon and driving out again toward Galway the next evening, so we'll have one decent day in Dublin. I currently have two hotels in mind - the Ashling Hotel, in D8, and Ariel House, in D4. The prices are nearly equal. Getting to city center is reportedly easier from the Ashling, but the Ariel includes breakfast. TA reviews are good for either. How the heck do I pick???

If traveling by car, Ariel House will be marginally more convenient for Dublin Port; Ashling Hotel will be handier for heading out to Galway. A lot might depend on times of arrival and departure. If traveling by public transport, the Ashling Hotel will be both more convenient for the port and the trip to Galway.

IIRC you have to pay for parking at The Ashling Hotel, while Ariel House has it free. I can't swear I'm right on that though.

I'm not sure there's much in it for the city centre. Both are 20-25 mins walk. The Ashling Hotel has a tram and several bus routes to the centre. Ariel House has a train and several bus routes in.

There are probably a few more places to eat and drink around Ariel House if you don't want to go into the centre at night. And if you did feel like going to the city centre, I'd be a bit more comfortable with the walk from the Ariel House after dark.

Take the Ashling, getting breakfast away from the hotel will not be an issue. There are a number of breakfast stands over at the train station (less than 5 mins walk away) where you can get take away tea coffee and savoury snacks which you can bring back to your room at the Ashling if you like. Getting from Ashling to city centre will take less than 10 mins on the Luas tram, which is about 2 or 3 min walk from your hotel. (Two stop choices, one stop at Heuston station or the second at Museum. www.museum.ie is about 3 mins walk from the Ashling Hotel, is free entry and is one of Dublins 'must sees', if you like good museums. The building itself (Collins Barracks) is quite amazing.

In fact you may be able to get breakfast at Collins Barracks. There is a very pleasant restaurant there.

Just read that the Museum cafe does not open until 10am which would be clearly too late for you.

Also be aware that the museum is closed on Mondays

Great pub near The Aishling called Ryan's of Parkgate St. If you stay there I'd advise checking it out.

There's a Superquinn around the corner from Heuston St with decent take out grub!

Sounds like either one has benefits...I will go over the reviews again and check the parking etc and try to come to a decision...I've just booked the ferry (the "swift" one that leaves Holyhead at 1715...I hope the weather is decent!
