Advice on 5- night trip with spunky 79-yr old mom

I am planning a short trip with my spunky and fit 79-yr old mom in June.  5 nights in Ireland, 2 in London where we fetch my teenage son.  We're planning to do day tours which seemed like a good alternative to an organized mulit-day tour (CIE) or driving ourselves.

Hotels: 2 nights in Dublin at Boswells (sharing a bed unless a twin room opens up...it will be cozy).  3 nights in Galway at The Park House.

Day 1 - arrive Dublin early am. Tour on our own and sleeps some.

Day 2 - tour with Day Tours Unplugged to Wicklow, Avoca and Glendalough.   http://www.daytoursunplugged.ie/

Day 3 - tour with MacCoole tours to Cliffs of Moher, a farm and Galway. http://www.maccooletours.com

Instead of returning to Dublin with them, we will stay put in Galway.  The tour folks confirmed that the trip back to Dublin is open-ended, so we can return at any time (or never!)

Day 4 - tour with Faherty Tours to Aran islands. http://www.fahertytours.com/

Day 5 - take another day tour (Connemara?) or just chill in Galway.  We could have tried to cram in the Ring of Kerry, but we think it's best to just stay in Galway area and be a bit more relaxed.

Day 6 - fly to London midday from Shannon.  Guess we will take public bus to airport.

Day 7 - tour around London.  Pick just one or two things to see.

Day 8 - pick up my son and fly home

I would love your advice on whether this seems like a good plan.  I will post in both Dublin and Galway forums.

Sounds good to me, but then again if it was my holiday I wouldn't go with so many tour companies but visit them myself therefore taking my time etc. but I can see why you want to be organised by booking them with your mothers age etc.

Enjoy Ireland,

Thanks iloveparis59. I've booked 2 tours (one to cliffs of Moher that gets us to Galway...the other of the Aran islands)....but have held back on other bookings.

I've got mixed feelings about our 2 days in Dublin at the start. First day is a tour-on-our-own for sure...see some Dublin sights, pubs, wander a bit. Second day we could hang out some more in Dublin or explore something like Wicklow/Glendalough. We don't want to drive on our own, so the mountain-type trip would mean a day tour for us.

I wonder if I can just let it ride and make decision once we are in Dublin?

I'm assuming you are flying into Dublin from the states, so considering jet lag and your plan to 'sleep some' the first day, you really aren't going to have much time to see Dublin.

I suggest you use the HOHO that first day which will give you a good overview of the top attractions in Dublin. It might be an exhausting day for both you and your mother if you try and push it too much that day. But, keep in mind that the HOHO ticket is good for two days. With a good rest, you will be free to spend more time at attractions that appealed to you the first day. And you will have time to wander around and do some shopping. Plus Dublin is very walker friendly and you can take in Grafton Street or other areas as well.

Then again, maybe your brief overview of Dublin the first day will be enough for you. So I recommend not booking anything and making your decision once you are there.

Wicklow/Glendalough are great and you might even consider Newgrange but wait until you decide on Dublin. Have a great trip!

Looks like a great itinerary - enjoy.

I'd use that 'spunky' reference sparingly however. The word has another connotation on these shores, that you might not be aware of.

Spare me my blushes and don't ask me to elucidate - ;-))

(alternatively - $10 dollars in the post will have me spill the beans)

So sorry! Funny, I was just glancing at my post title and wondering about that word when I opened this and read your comment.

I am blushing like a schoolgirl!

Of course in us in the states it means "courageous & lively".

Perhaps I should start a post seeking other terms to watch out for. My extensive reading of the forum has already yearned me of "wrong side of the road" and "bless you" in response to a sneeze, but there are likely others I would become famous for.
