 Parking in Bath

We will be visiting Bath either on a Sunday or Monday. We will be driving from Kenilworth, but understand that it is easiest to get around town on foot. Where would be a good place to park so that we may avoid any violations? How much would that cost? Many thanks!

Just to clarify, we are only staying one day. Arriving in the morning, leaving in the evening on the same day.

Hi

Thousands of people manage to drive through Bath each year without picking up a traffic fine.

Just keep well away from Pulteney Bridge/Milson Street/Walcot St/Argyle St. Be immediately suspicious if the tarmac/road surface changes colour from black to beige/red and/or there are lots of hanging baskets....you need to slow down and read the road signs...and obey them.

If you are coming on a Monday, then I think it is best to head to a Park & Ride. Where are you heading to (there are several P&R's on the outskirts; I think I would aim for the one closest to the route you are planning to leave by)?

On a Sunday, residents parking restrictions don't apply through much (possibly all) of the City so you can park in the residents' parking zones for free.

Shout if you need more info

Thank you!! We will be coming from Kenilworth, possibly down the M4 toward A46 (after consulting Google Maps). Do you have a suggestion about the best place to park? Would you suggest going on one day over the other?

Just realised you said a Sunday or a Monday: Sunday, no question,

Also your route using the M4 is not a good idea, assuming you go via Oxford then this is 130 miles, vs 80 for the direct route. Check the AA Route Planner at http://www.theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp

If you go on a Monday, no matter what time you leave you will have working traffic to deal with, which will increase the time * 1.5 and the stress * 100. Leave at 07:30 on Sunday the roads will be empty, you should be here by 10:00.

Some city centre car parks have time limits - I suggest you use the Avon Street Car Park, which is £12.50 for the whole day. Head straight for the Roman Baths, before the queues build up.

Are you really unable to spend the night in Bath ? you may be in the car for > 5 hours in a single day. I have looked at the trains, not an option, sadly.

Hi again

So you going to Bath and back to Kenilworth (or at least in that direction)? In that case I would use the Lansdown Park & Ride

visitbath.co.uk/site/…bath-park-and-ride

If you type the postcode BA1 9BG into your online map/travel planner/sat-nav it will take you to this car park which is a couple of miles out from the City. I think the bus is £3 return. It drops you in Milsom Street (which is one of the main shopping streets about 5 minutes' walk from the Abbey and Baths). If you are fit and healthy (and not in a hurry), you could ask to be dropped at Lansdown Crescent and walk down to the Royal Crescent from there.

On a Sunday I think the cheapest (paid for) car park is at the train station (£5.90/day), otherwise I would drive in on London Rd, turn left at Cleveland Bridge following signs for A36 road and look for a parking space along either St John's Road, Bathwick Street itself or Henrietta St/Rd (i.e. any of the roads on the right). It is only a 5-10 minute walk into town from there.

A big caveat to this is if you are travelling on a Rugby day....but the season doesn't start for a while.

If you can get to Newbridge Park & Ride it would be more suitable - but it's closed on Sunday!!!

Ignore my comment about Newbridge P&R - you should aim for Lansdown P&R as suedunc said, but that's closed on Sundays too.

And suedunc is 100% correct about parking in Henrietta Park.

If you get to Bath early enough (and I mean early!) you might find a parking place in Victoria Park. Make sure you have a good satnav though and don't get stuck in the one-way system if you are heading there!

If I understand previous responses to brock463's question - parking on Sunday is free in many areas and not a problem - correct?

Hi elsie44

Here goes with a simplified guide:

On Sundays most car parks will still charge but on a hot day you might prefer an underground car park?

Most streets in central Bath (about a mile radius of the Abbey) have most street parking set aside for residents' parking BUT these restrictions only apply from 8am-7pm Monday to Saturday so Sundays are fine. In each of the zones there are signs on posts identifying that you are in a zone and it will specify the times it applies.

If the street you are in is Pay & Display do double check the ticket machine (I am only about 90% confident that you can park for free on Sundays in those

bays)

Do not park on double yellow lines

Hope this helps, rather than confuses

Do not park on double-yellow lines, do not block driveways etc.
