 departure taxes?

I understand LHR has very high departure tax, is that to ALL countries?

Would it be less expensive to fly to US from Ireland for that reason?

Departure taxes are added to the cost of air tickets; I wonder if you're thinking of the fuel surcharge, which (whilst added to ticket price rather than something extra to pay) is a bit on the high side, even for flights in Economy.

You may find cheaper fares from DUB or SNN but if you wish to visit the UK you'll need to add the cost of travel from point to point.

Ooops, should have mentioned we will be travelling on employee standby status, I understand tax is deducted from our paycheck, just want to save as much as possible, thank you for your quick reply however!

Because there are so many airlines competing from the UK to the US, transatlantic airfares are often lower than from other European countries. Other countries also have a number of taxes and fees added to the price of the ticket, so the tax difference is often not as great from the UK as might at first appear. All taxes are included in the ticket price, so it's easy to compare prices for the time you want to travel.

Deborah K - I think this is probably a very specialist question. You might want to post on one of the specialist aircrew forums. I wish I knew the name of a forum to suggest. airlinecrew.net might work.

If you are talking specifically about APD, air passenger duty, then yes the UK has about the highest in Europe. There is no APD from Amsterdam so perhaps flying from here would be an asnswer. Normally prices are actually more expensive from Amsterdam but since you are non rev that is not important to you.

APD from the UK to the USA for flights under 4k miles is £130.00 and £162.00 abive 4k miles (after the 31st March. So it might be worth you while spending £50 or so on a flight to Amsterdam or somewhere else with low/no APD.

Deborah K - we are flying to UK from Australia. with Etihad. We saved $180 per person by departing from Dublin rather than London. The airfares were the same but the $180 saving was in the taxes.

Having said that visiting Ireland was in the plan so we didn't make a special journey to Dublin.
