 summer itinerary with teen boys

What a lot of great information on this forum!

My family, including husband, 2 young teenage boys, and myself will be going to England in June. We will be staying 3 days/2 nights in London. We'll also be doing a separate day trip for a show (Wizard of OZ and the Science Museum). I've put together an itinerary, and I would love your feedback!

Day 1 - After 2 hour train ride, checking into hotel about 10a. Heading straight to Imperial War Museum, where we plan on spending several hours (and lunch).

Walk down Thames, checking out street performers and a bite at Master Fish and Chips (the boys want some good fish and chips). Cruise down the Thames to St Katherine Docks. It might be about 6p-7p. Is this a good time for a cruise, and is there a place to get a little dessert, maybe an ice cream parlor? Another option is the London Eye, but my boys are not too keen.

Day 2 - London Walks Tour (London Tour) 1030a -1230p ending at Trafalgar Square (this includes Westmisnter Abbey, Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, and Changing of Guard, along with other sights). It ends at Trafalgar Sqaure.

Enjoy the sights of Trafalgar Square, lunch at Walkers and Whitehall.

British Museum

Covent Garden. I'd love suggestions for dinner, somewhere fun, in the heart of covent garden would be ideal. Whether it's a diner, Indian, or a pub, we are open. We're looking to spend no more than 15 -17 pounds for a main.

Day 3- Check-out of hotel/ leave bags with hotel

Tower of London

Walk across bridge to Burroughs Market/lunch

Walk across Mellenium Bridge to St Paul's Cathedral including the crypt and climbing the dome.

Pick up luggage from hotel.

Welcome to the forum. But some more information would be useful.

What are the dates that you are doing this, in case anything special is happening around then? - June is a busy month.

Day 1 - if you boarded a train at 8 am, then presumably you're arriving from somewhere in England or Europe so won't be jet-lagged. Are you sure that you can check into your hotel as early as 10 am? And where is it, in case there's anything interesting nearby.

Day 2 - Covent Garden. Many restaurants there do pre-theatre meals with 2 or 3 courses for a fixed price. Of course, you don't have to go to a theatre afterwards. Depending on the ages of your teenage sons, they may not be admitted to some pubs or will have to leave later in the evening. It depends on how old they are.

Day 3 - I hope this is a Friday or Saturday, because Borough Market is closed most other days.

What days (i.e. Thurs, -Sat or Mon-Thur) are you talking about?

Also, what time do you need to be back at the airport?

Hello Flewbyyou

A warm welcome from England - we've travelled to America several times and love the America people - we've always felt welcome .

I'm from Liverpool - The Beatles!! So when we have visited London it's been a holiday for us too!

We went with our teenage boys and went to an amazing restaurant called Inamo in Soho. The tables are interactive computers - you order your food from them, play games, change the 'virtual' table cloths etc. There are some clips on utube - and there is a website. The food is fab and I'd highly recommend - my boys loved it.

I hope you have a wonderful time here in the UK :). From one 'Mom' to another !

Our 3 days in London will be in June Tues-Thurs. Will Burrough Market be closed midweek, even in the summer? I am not worried about checking in to the hotel. I will just drop my bags off, and no worries about jet lag. We will be elsewhere in England. My boys are 13 and 15 yo. I hope all this information helps..thanks!

Wow, Inamo sounds fun!! How far a walk from Covent Garden?

I just went on the Burrough market webpage. It looks like they are open Thursday 11-5p. That's the day we'll be there, so we are good there!

Tower of London will take 2-3 hours. Then you propose walking the Tower Bridge, and lunching in Borough Market.

Please note that the last entry to St. Paul's is at 4:00. If you want to do the whole thing--from crypt to the top, you'll need a minimum of a couple of hours.

I hope your flight leaves really late. I don't see you emerging from St. Paul's until 6ish, and then you still need time to pick up your bags, get to the airport, check in, security, etc.

We are not taking a flight. We will be staying in England. Leaving late is fine.

Another recommendation for Inamo here - there's a second branch, more recently opened, on lower Regent Street, which I've been to several times with several different people and everybody loves it. It's quite fun being able to play Battleship on the table with your dining companion!

Is it easy enough for us to take a city bus from Liverpool Street to Master Fish and Chips, and then walk to the Imperial Was Museum from Master Fish and Chips?

Yes you can get the bus, will take about 40 mins and a short walk at the end. Walking to the Museum from the restaurant is not far, about 5-8 mins.

Note that the Transport for London websiteJourney Planner http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ allows you to enter any start/finish location and will give you bus route options and journey times and a map. From the Home page click More Options, enter details then scroll down to advanced options and uncheck 'Tube' so it only gives you the bus. You can use stations, main sites or Postcodes are the search criteria.

ww.walkit.com is good for showing best walking routes and estimating walking times.
