Parking at Stratford - Olympic Park

Just a question for locals: we're attending the Olympic test event at the Velodrome next weekend and notes from the organisers say NOT to travel by car as there is no parking at the Olympic Park. Fair enough, but the instructions then say to arrive by train and proceed through the Westfield Shopping Centre by foot. Which rather suggests to me that we could be travelling by car and parking at Westfield, right? Or is there something about the parking there we should know about?

As it is a test event, I'm sure they'll be monitoring how many people are using public transport and how the system can cope.

There are parking spaces at Westfield. The Olympics are supposed to be "Car Free" as it is environmentally friendly, to use public transportation. Every Olympic ticket is coming with a zone 1 - 6 travel card. I don't know if your test event tickets come with that or not.

The Olympic park has NO PARKING, then therefore, the Olympic Park has no Car Parking. If you want to use Westfield, then that is your choice, but if all 6000 people who are attending brought 1 car, there would be 1000 people at the test event, without a parking space at Westfield, and also, no one who wanted to shop, to go shopping wouldn't be able to park. Also, there wouldn't be a stress test on the Public Transportation.

Also, if I can't get a parking space when I want a parking space, because you wanted to drive, to an olympic test event, when I want to go shopping in Waitrose, or M&S, because they're convenient for me, then I may be rather annoyed. Think about the people who live in Stratford, and how you could be inconveniencing them, (me), by bringing your car.

You'll want to be aware of the price of parking at Westfield, it's designed to discourage long stays. 3.5 hours will cost you £10.

The car park charges for the shopping centre are here. Not sure how long your test event will last, but the rates really do ramp up steeply to deter longer stays.

All local roads are controlled parking, so I don't think that will work.

Possibly park at somewhere like Epping tube station, just off the M11 - then the central line will take you directly to the Olympic park.

Thanks for four really useful comments. I'm not desperate to drive (and if I did, I would usually expect to park further out and get the Tube in) but I was just intrigued about how the Olympics organisers are able to claim there's no car parking while pretending the huge great shopping centre doesn't exist.

Perhaps because there isn't car parking at the Olympics Park and the car parking at the shopping centre is really meant for bona fide users of the shopping centre, which is recognised by the suggestion to walk through the shopping centre?

" Olympics organisers are able to claim there's no car parking "

During the Olympic period, there will be no public access to the Westfield car parks, so they're not being entirely disingenuous with that message. And to be fair to them, they need to test the public transport facilities as part of the test events, hence the encouragement for spectators to come by train.

(As an aside - what's rather annoying is that the Olympic organisers are hiring the entire Westfield car parks to store all those BMWs that the VIPs will be swanning about in. grrrrrr)

That explains a lot! Thank you.

As an aside, there's a direct train from my station (Cambridge) to Stratford. It's a shame it's not running on the day of the forthcoming event because of engineering works. I hope they manage to get *those* sorted for the Real Thing in the summer.
