Funky, luxurious, romantic night in Brighton: help please!

My husband has a business meeting in Brighton in May and we were hoping to stay overnight the preceding night somewhere lovely, groovy (as we're leaving the kids at home and want to feel a little bit young again) and relaxing. I know that's a lot to ask for in one request, but Brighton does seem to have a wealth of hotels and guesthouses up for the offering and I never really trust photos on websites as rooms can be quite a disappointment in size and arrangement when you get there ... we've been considering Seaspray penthouse as my husband has seen this hotel on tv and liked the theming of their groovier rooms - but is the penthouse just a glorified loft space or is it worth the stairs? I've also looked into blanch house, greys, guest and the city and drakes (Drakes might be pushing the boat out a bit as we would want Breakfast but don't want the better value DB&B they offer, I've already booked Gingerman for dinner).

Please help! Advice and insider tips welcome ... We do know Brighton pretty well - the meeting the next day is north of Kemptown, so I'm happy to stick around that area but also know that the Gingerman is the other side of the pier.

"Our flagship suite: the ultimate "dirty weekend" room. Dedicated to all things decadent and indulgent, think burlesque, kitsch and sexy boudoir all rolled into one.
8 ft round bed, mirrored canopy, separate living area, 42” LCD Television, pole dancing area, giant plunge bath and double monsoon shower heads and its own entrance from the stree".

That's a good call from Bo.

Some friends from overseas stayed here before Xmas, I think it was the 'Brenda's Boudoir ' room. They had a good size bed and room at around £160. They said it was OTT but fun and for a couple of nights they'd go back. It's also very close to Gingerman and several good places to eat on Western Road. Great local pub too, The Lion & Lobster, good place for dinner upstairs. It's a great location.

Hi Happy

Well, to be honest it's almost a year since my last meal at Gingerman Norfolk Sq. I've been going for many years, 2-3 times a year I suppose. If

I'm looking for a quiet evening of quality with my wife, it's a cocktail somewhere followed by dinner in Gingerman, i've never had a bad meal there, the service and atmosphere is also very nice, sometimes the food has been outstanding to top Michelin standards. It is a 'cosy' place, not particularly private as tables close together, that's the only critic I hear but as fellow diners tend to be couples or quiet groups it's never been a negative for me personally. I think it's good value too.

If you are staying two nights I'd definitely book Gingerman for one, and then try a more funky and casual place the other night. Brighton has a huge selection of places to eat out, maybe hang out in North Laines the other evening, that's 'new and funky Brighton'.

Have fun

Brilliant, thanks Stoofer. This trip, we're just staying for one night ahead of a business meeting next day. We love Brighton, and have visited lots, but have never managed to get a GM booking before, so I've jumped on it and booked it already. I just wanted to make sure it was worth the wait! I'll be free to mooch around all day while he's at the meeting, so I'll prob head for North Laine or Kemp Town - we love the little metro tea shop up there with all the antiques and amazing teas and cakes!

We've stayed at myhotel before, which we liked, so am weighing up that again, pelirocco or a guest hous somewhere near KT. I take it you'd recommend Peli most?

I have no experience of MyHotel except the bar (& toilets lol) . I just thought Peli fitted your brief and so seconded Bojangles recommendation.

I'm sure MyHotel is a good option too, fine location as you know, it's really your call as to what you fancy on what budget.

Not sure what the 1-night stay situation will be like? I thought you needed 2, many hotels don't take 1-night bookings but I'm no expert on that.

Anyway, wherever you end up have a great night out, please post back as to how you found Gingerman
