Summercourt Cottages Pet Friendly But Not All Breeds.

I responded to an on line advert for Summercourt Cottages and requested a brochure from them, I also filled in the comments box giving my dog information. Below is an exchange of emails and as you can see it is only certain pets they will have, this is not put in their web advert so they are misleading people.

My Email: - additional information = 1 x Female Staffordshire bull terrier, very well trained (training school name available) Bonnie will be 1 year and 1 day old on the above date.

Reply to email: - Thank you for your email, however we are sorry we cannot help

Regards

Mac Hocking

My response: - Sorry to ask but is there a reason as the dates show availability and the site I used recommended you for pets.

Thanks Brin

Reply to email: - Our insurance no longer covers us for certain dog breeds inc Staffies

My response: - Thanks but just to let you know my dog is fully insured and third party's are covered for a sum of up to £1m pounds. My dog is cat, rabbit, and rat friendly so I think your insurance company are fools and costing you revenue. I belong to a forum called staffysrus.co.uk I will make sure that your site gets a mention so you do not get bothered by any other staffy owners also if your on trip advisor I will make sure that people know this. Thanks for your time and reply but you have missed the chance of getting to know one of the softest dogs you could wish to meet. Could you please change your web site to reflect this ban on the breed, and as I said in my request you could have contacted the training school to find out what Bonnie is like, it is wrong to tar all staffy's because of some bad press they are not all like that, they are not even on the dangerous dog act list.

Thanks for your time and am sorry will not be seeing you in July.

Reply to email :- Unfortunately a minority has caused a problem for the majority

To judge me with the irresponsible owners of the staffy breed is completely unfair and if Mr Hocking has anything about him he should have words with his Insurance company, he should also clearly make it known on the web site that they do discriminate against certain dog breeds.

Using the insurance company sounds like a cop out to me. You are responsible for your dog not the owner of a self catering property - they must be talking about public liability cover and your own pet insurance covers that so it sounds very dubious to me.

Their loss...hope you have a great time in a better cottage elsewhere !

I bet she is gorgeous! All staffie girls we and our ones have ever met were real softies. Anyway, it is always the owner never the dog and unfortunately we responsible dog owners are always put in the same pot as, well, you know whom I am talking about. As I have said before: Padstow (and North Cornwall): A very doggie friendly place. Perhaps you should have a look for a cottage there instead.

Is this site now been taken over by the "We love Staffies brigade." They may be loving and harmless pets (as far as their owners are concerned) but the general public still views this breed of dog with concern albeit in this particular case it may be a real softy. That's the real story and concern from the general public's viewpoint whether right or wrong.

As a guest with young children I would still be very concerned if I had a cottage, not just at this location or at any other location, where my next door neighbour had a Staffie, Rottie, Dobie, Rhodie and perhaps even a German Shepie.

That's life as they say and a neccesary reality. If I had one of the aforementioned breeds I would be looking for a holiday cottage but not within a group of other cottages for all the above reasons.

Finally I do hope that the previous comments do not tarnish in any way the reputation of this excellent establishment.

I like dogs, I have had several labradors and my daughter has a border collie,

I would however say that a cottage owner has the right to accept or not accept dogs as they wish. Many people are nervous of Staffies.

As a dog lover I sympathise greatly.

Very narrowminded of the owner of the cottages. ANY dog can be dangerous in the wrong hands. It's about time people woke up and realised it's the OWNER of the dog that is the problem and not the dog itself.

I am an owner of German Shepherds who also come with the same stigma. We have come across campsites who will not take our dogs so we take our custom elsewhere. Our dogs happen to be the best behaved dogs on site - you wouldn't even know we had them, majority of the time it's the little ankle biters making all the noise!!

I have enjoyed many holidays all over the UK with our dogs (in cottages, log cabins, caravans, chalets etc) so there are plenty to choose from. I can understand how frustrated and upset you are, as after all you are a responsible owner of a lovely dog.

Hope you find a lovely place to stay, and your dog has a great holiday!!!!
