 Cornwall Car Hire

I wish I had read previous posts regarding 'Cornwall Car Hire' before hiring a car with and would suggest to fellow travellers that they pay a little extra and use Hertz as I did on previous visits. It pains me to say this but as other TA reviewers have said previously there is something untoward here, & their customer service could be improved upon to say the least. I too have spoken with a gentleman who implied I was a liar yet I can assure you (and him as no doubt he's reading this) that I am in no way one of his unscrupulous customers which he has referred to as a defense mechanism on this site.

We (4 adults) collected our car from Newquay airport, the rep pointed out the various dents and I signed a form saying I agreed to these dents. I was given a copy of this form. I paid CDW so my deposit was £300. On returning the car at same airport the rep walked round the car, and then asked if there was a full tank of petrol to which I replied yes- he didn't check this. I then signed a form which I assumed was confirming that the car was returned in same manner as collected because I had my copy from arrival in my hand and this new form was identical to that and there were no additional pen marks showing new damage. I was not given a copy of this form. NO chips were pointed out to me, and NO discussions were had. I asked for a receipt to show that my deposit had not been banked and was told that he couldn't find it and the only thing the rep said after this was to wish us all a safe flight. Today I receive a bill for £70.50 as apparently there was damage to the car, my invoice tells me there were not 1 but 3 chips on the windscreen "as pointed out by representative"

I have spoken to who I assume is the same gentleman that previous TA's have spoken to who told me I was a grown woman and I can read can't I after I told him I had thought the form I signed was saying the car was returned in the same state as when I collected it. He tells me that my signature is on this form (the one I was not given a copy of and apparenty surprise surprise it is not their policy to give you a copy when you return the car), and this form is annotated with 3 chips to the windscreen. If I wsh to see a copy of this there will of course be an admin fee. This form may well state further damage but it didn't state this at the time I signed it so how could these changes have been made to the form when I was no longer present (without a duplicate copy of my own)?? If I am not given a copy of the said form, and no discussion took place and my passengers were witness to this then how and more importantly when did this form get updated to reflect the chips (of which I know nothing about)?? I asked this gentleman what assumption he would make if this happened to him and of course he could not say. So I was not given a copy of this form at the time and this damage was not pointed out to me or discussed with me at the time, yet somehow damage has been recorded on the form what am I supposed to think? What would you think? Be careful when choosing a car, don't go for the cheapest option like I did because as today has proven, it clearly wasn't cheap in the end. There are plenty of other car hire firms out there so do what I didn't do (hindsight is a wonderful thing) and read the reviews on here first as there are others out there who have had all too similar experiences with them so this isn't just a coincidence and there is a pattern here which the company cannot deny unless they are calling all of us on here liars. If anyone has successfully had a refund form this firm can you PM me please before I contact Watchdog and Trading Standards? Thanks

Hi

We are in exactly the same position. We returned hire car to Cornwall Car Hire on Saturday 4th Sept. No discusson about any problems when inspected by representative. We received notification yesterday that we had been charged £70.50 for 'scuffing on alloy wheel' with a note saying not to phone office as they would not be able to help and any request for photographic evidence would need a cheque for £10 for admin fees.

Also noticed following article in Guardian you might like to look up.

Hi

We had a lovely holiday to newquay in August and hired a car from these people. Everything was fine until we got home - the next thing we know is when the credit card bill came through and we were charged £53 for a finger dent. It seems very odd that they take the £300 deposit the second they have the details, which is very strange. When I called them about the money taken they said the representative had pointed out the dent. What a lie!!!!!!!! No way did the man point out any damage. My daughter of 19, my partner and myself had checked the car thoroughly before we gave it back and there was not a scratch on it. I too rang them and complained and the man more or less called me a liar and said he had my signature to say I was aware of it! It may be 6 weeks ago now and im still fuming they shouldnt be allowed to get away with it!

I recently hired a car from Hertz at another UK regional airport and was immediately offered full CDW i.e. no deposit required apart from sufficient to cover refuelling charge if I didn't return vehicle with full tank. It may cost a little more per day but full CDW provides 'peace of mind' as, no matter how careful you are with the rental car, stone chips etc may be thrown up by other vehicles or some other incident occurs completely beyond the control of the hirer....and yet some car rental companies such as that described by OP severely penalise hirer in such circumstances.

It's worth noting that the amount I paid extra to hire from Hertz was considerably less than the surcharges described on this thread.

Hi there

It's a shame that this unscrupulous company have tainted your trips to Cornwall. It sounds as though they attract custoomers with a low rate , knowing well that they will charge extra at the end of the rental period for non-existent damage to the car. I'd be straight on the phone to Watchdog but it is also a salutory lesson never to take the cheapest option as there is invariably a "catch".

Sorry to say, but I probably got charged for that exact same 'finger dent'; This implausibly minor defect was pointed out to me (with difficulty) by a very attentive inspector. The 'dent' in question could only be seen with difficulty ... it was so minor that I couldn't document it on my camera (and I'm a photographer!). This was a set-up and I'm sure the same dent has earned these chancers quite an income this summer.

Unfortunately the charge that was made against my credit card has gone staright into their coffers. There is no way that the dent can be remedied and unfortunately, it will remain there as a means of charging future unsuspecting and well-meaning customers. This company is a disgrace.

Sorry to hear all this as this sort of thing spoils your holiday and leaves lasting memories for the wrong reasons!

It could be a good idea to point all the problems with this company to the Cornwall Tourist Board and also to Newquay Airport authorities as this sort of publicity is the last thing they need.

After seeing the latest post on this forum about CCH, I just had to sign up with an account so I could let everybody know how utterly atrocious and disgusting our dealings with this horrible company were. And not surprisingly, it is a very similar story to the other people who have been ripped off (and these are only the ones who have bothered to make a post on tripadvisor - imagine how many others there would be!).

We hired a car earlier this year (2010) with CCH. Booking the car and picking it up was all fine and dandy. When we dropped it off however, Martin, the scrupulous inspector of practically non-existent scratches and marks (which were probably there when you picked it up if you bothered to get a magnifying glass and check) noticed there was a tiny scratch on the front of the vehicle - which we didn't notice when we picked it up. Even if it wasn't there in the first place, it was so small and nondescript it wasn't even worth mentioning. He said that he had noted it on the form as a mark, and that we should sign the form (which we never got a copy of) to say we had seen it and talked about it. He said it 'shouldn't be a problem'. When I got home, I noticed that £300 had been taken out of our account during the hire (funny that), but had not been put back in. I called Simon at the office, who told me that we were only going to get £150 refunded as there was 'damage' to the vehicle. I said that was ridiculous, the mark was so small it was barely noticable and it was probably there when we first picked it up. Unfortunately, as I had signed the paper to say it was there when we dropped it off, they had us pinned and that was that.

Things got ugly. Simon became rude, aggressive and uncooperative. He completely transformed. He said we had to write to the manager, a lady who apparantly doesn't talk to customers on the phone. We eventually got a reply saying they were not going to refund the money. Simon mentioned on one of the phone calls that the £150 is taken to pay the excess back to the lease company for all the damage received on the vehicle - so what about the damage that was already there - and the damage that would inherently occur in the future? £150 per rental with the same story is how they make their money... and it makes me feel sick to the stomach.

We got mad (obviously) and went through Trading Standards to complain, who were unable to overturn the decision. Eventually, the only option was to take the matter further through the small claims court, but we have emigrated from the UK and this is not a viable option. The best thing to do would have been to take notice from all the other people on tripadvisor and avoid hiring from this greedy, manipulative, dispicable company in the first place. Don't make the same mistake we did.

Hi bandl

Can't you contact you credit card issuer and get them to refund you the money that was charged to your account for the non-existent damages?

I tried that. I got in touch with Visa debit chargebacks and disputes, sent them all the documentation we had but they were unable to help. I tried every avenue I could think of but to no avail.... It's now just 'one of those things' but I hope now less people will endure the same problem.

In reply to this I would advise all potential customers to read the comments from our customers on our testimonials page which include comments from regular hirers as well who really think we offer a great level of service and value for money.

We liase with trading standards who have written to us to inform us that for the amount of customers we have which is alot complaints are very few.
