 Bristol to Edinburgh

We are currently in Bristol and making our way up to Edinburgh by car. Can anyone suggest a good route for this. Not looking at travelling straight through but a couple of places to stop at on the way would be good. My husband would like to cross the bridge near Bristol (The Severn Bridge) and go up that way but any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Well, that will cost you about £5 for the privelege, and unless you are desperate to go somewhere in Wales it is a bit of a detour.

I would not chose to go over the Severn Bridge to get to Scotland. It will just take you out of your way along the M4. Unless ou go over the bridge and then get off at Newport and go up through Monmouth towards Ross on Wye and then on up the M50 to join the M5 north-bound.

Go over the Forth Road Bridge when you reach Edinburgh, it's free. While you are at it drop into South Queensferry and admire the Forth Bridge

M5 north to Birmingham from Bristol and between there and Manchester/Salford you have to decide which stopover you prefer. I think a trip to Liverpool and maybe do one of the Beatles tours...or maybe something around Stoke (potteries region) or the Lake District which is really beautiful. An overnight stay would give you a nicer journey for sure. You definitely want to get off the motorway to find some real food and local character... service stations are soul-less and unnecessarily expensive.

jow (2) is a good suggestion, Ross on Wye & the Wye Valley in the Royal Forrest of Dean is beautiful royalforestofdean.info/wye-valley/ross-on-wy… also the scenery towards the M5 and get on the motorway later - Bristol motorway is deadly dull. In fact the less you do on motorway the better, so many nice places on the way up.

Worcester is a nice town with a very famous pottery http://www.worcesterporcelainmuseum.org/ lots of tours & museums in Stoke, Minton makes china for the richest people in the world or include one on history of toilets! stokemuseums.org.uk/gpm/…information_sheet_70 & of course Wedgewood.

LIverpool if you prefer more pop than culture

The Lake District is beautiful, very different from Perth. http://www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/visiting and you have the Yorkshire Dales just off the road too yorkshiredales.org.uk/index/specialplace.htm The Forth Bridge is a good bet too. http://www.forthbridges.org.uk/

Enjoy. You couldn't have a better route for seeing stuff, a heck of a choice.

I hope that's a joke suebovington *wags finger*

Liverpool - more pop than culture ?

The city wasn't European Capital of Culture for nothing !!

- the Empire, Royal Court, Everyman and Playhouse theatres; and the Philharmonic Hall and Echo Arena - all showcasing the best West End touring musicals and productions, shows, orchestras, ballets, singers and bands.

- the Walker, Tate and Sudley art galleries (all free entry)

- the World Museum, Merseyside Maritime Museum, Museum of Liverpool (all free entry)

- the Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral and the Anglican Cathedral which is the largest cathedral in the UK and 5th largest in the world.

- a World Heritage Site and the city with the most listed buildings outside of London, including the Albert Dock (the largest collection of listed buildings on one site), and more Georgian buildings than Bath.

- the oldest Chinese community in Europe and the largest Chinese arch outside of China

- Two Premier League football teams, one of which is the most succesful English football club; plus home of the Grand National, the world most famous steeplechase.

- birthplace of hundreds of famous actors, writers, artists, engineers, musicians etc

I could go on but I don't want to write a 15,000 word dissertation about culture in Liverpool.

P.S. now I know why I moved back to Liverpool after living for 8 years in Somerset and Wiltshire - I wanted some of my culture back !

P.P.S. I got away with that without even mentioning the "B" word !! ;-)
