Second Visit...looking for itinerary and dining suggestions

Greetings,

I will be in Cape Town for 7 nights in mid-end of April. I was fortunate to visit in November 2011 and have been to many of the more "typical" first time tourist/visitor sights...Robben Island, V&A Waterfront, Cape Peninsula day with Good Hope and Boulders Beach, Table Mountain, and a day tour to a Stellenbosch winery (but haven't explored the towns yet).

My son is studing at UCT for the semester and is staying in Observatory area. He will show me around some, but I will have some time on my own while he is in class and such. Would welcome suggestions for activities/areas to explore. Am considering District Six Museum, Jewish Synagogue, Bo-Kaap, Kirstenbosch Gardens, and a township visit.

Any favorites? Ideas I may have missed?

Would also like to take him away for a 2 night weekend getaway, but I understand some things are not open/ideal over the weekend. Maybe Hermanus? Are whales there at that time of year? In season for Shark Cage Diving?

I don't see many accommodations options for Observatory area...seeking that as well.

Love good dining of all sorts - last trip I was on a work trip so most meals provided. I am excited to explore around and take son out for some good meals. Casual - all budgets (other than super high end/Michelin stuff).

Thanks for any suggestions you may have!

Have a look at Rondebosch or Newlands for somewhere to stay close to your son in Obs, Claremont is not to far superb for shopping, dining, cinema.

To early for whales.

Destination Expert   What's this?
for South Africa

Obs is a suburb close to UCT and has quite a bohemian feel. Very popular with students but not very popular with the tourists who like to be more central. If you want to stay in Obs, there are some B&Bs in that area; safarinow.com/destinations/…hub.aspx

April is a bit early for Whales but its good for Shark cage diving - if you want to do that, head to Hermanus for the weekend. Otherwise there are lots of wine region towns to choose from or you could even head up the West Coast to the West Coast National Park, quaint town of Paternoster, lunch at The Strandloper restaurant in Langebaan: http://www.strandloper.com/
