 Ontario with kids

I am a single mom of camping kids ages 6 and 8, we are planning a Canadian trip this summer, we will probably stay at the KOA in Thunder Bay, and I would like to see the Fur Trade Post, the Amethyst Mine, and somehow get to the Foot Bridge...We are planning on staying about a week, and I like to do about one thing a day... any ideas on what to see between thunder bay and eagle creek, and any other things we shouldn't miss while we are there?

Hi

Here is one suggestion:

Travel Highway 587 40 kilometres from Thunder Bay along the Sibley Peninsula on the Trail of the Giant. This 37 kilometre touring route passes through the Township of Shuniah then 22 kilometers in the Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. It begins at Highway 11/17 40 kilometres East of Thunder Bay and ends at the scenic and historic village of Silver Islet.

Home to legendary Sleeping Giant and beautiful Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, this is a drive that is not to be missed. Stay awhile and experience the Giant’s backcountry trails through boreal forests or hike to the top this massive formation for unbeatable views of Lake Superior. Deer, moose and other large mammals can be viewed in the Park’s vast forests and lowlands.

Along the way, watch for rock climbers at scenic Pass Lake and stop to enjoy the views.

Picturesque Silver Islet is home to the historic Silver Islet General Store which has stood proudly on the rugged shores of Lake Superior for over a century. It was the original company store for the Silver Islet Mining and Lands Company. From 1868 to 1884, nearly $3 million worth of silver ore was extracted from the lake, briefly making it the world's richest silver mine.

Hope you enjoy your visit to Thunder Bay.

Hi TracyCharms,

Welcome to the THUNDER BAY TRAVEL FORUM.

Well if you say Thunder Bay to most Canadians… you’ll immediately hear back these two magic words… Terry Fox… one of Canada’s greatest icons, an Average Guy (just 22) who became a HERO and forever changed the face of the disabled here in Canada... into MOST ABLE-BODIED, and his legacy is the ongoing money that is raised for cancer research annually, by men & women, kids and grand-parents.

So like many, when in Thunder Bay you may want to make the pilgrimage to check out the Terry Fox Memorial just outside of Thunder Bay… on the stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway named appropriately “Terry Fox Courage Highway” where his cross-Canada Marathon of Hope run came to a too soon end in 1980.

It is a sad story… but indeed an inspiration to us all… all across Canada there are Terry Fox Runs (named in his honour) run each September… and todate they have raised well over $ 500 Million for Cancer Research.
