Where to camp near Thunder Bay?

A few friends and I are planning a roadtrip/camping trip to see the North Shore in Minnesota and Canada. We're going to take 4 days and drive up from the La Crosse, WI area. We kind of have our hearts set on camping in Canada (even though I realize there are myriad places to see on the Minnesota side too).

Can anyone recommend the best camping grounds in the Thunder Bay area? Since it's only a short trip, we want to keep our driving time around 8 1/2 hours or less, which is why we're looking at Thunder Bay.

I've looked at Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park online a bit, and we're considering stopping there. How's the campground there? Are they many good hiking trails in the area, or are the falls the main attraction?

Thanks for any input!

Kakabeka Falls Prov Park was a nice spot from what I recall...But I haven't been there for about 20 years now!

Quetico Prov Park was very nice for camping too.

Maybe someone else has more updated info on these parks, though I doubt that they've changed too much (I hope).

Here is a link to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. It is very popular.

Here is a link for the Kakabeka Falls Hiking Trails.

There is also a KOA just outside of Thunder Bay if you want to use it as a base to stay.

For camping also check out Chippewa park, nice cabins.

Kakabeka is good as there are hiking trails and picnic areas. Quetico is amazing, but far.

Do the Sleeping Giant as the trails there are amazing, more of a destination in itself.

KOA is good. As well check out he Hostel in town.

You can also consider Trowbridge campground just off of Hodder and the hwy 17, nice river there.

So many options, what did u decide on?

Wow, thanks for all the great advice! Our trip got pushed back to August, so we haven't made any decisions yet...so many options! I'm thinking we'll most likely end up camping at Kakabeka and doing day-drives to the other parks (Sleeping Giant, etc) to go hiking.

Another question: should we make reservations at any of these campgrounds, or do you think we'll have luck finding a campsite if we just show up that afternoon?

Hi ShiningHalo,

Welcome to the THUNDER BAY TRAVEL FORUM.

If it is your intention to stay at an Ontario Provincial Park... then by all means I encourage you to make a Reservation... the Parks are very popular (and seem to be more so each year).

Thanks for the link. We can definitely make a reservation.

Now... I'm picky about campsites... Usually when I camp, we drive around the campground a few times and pick the "best one" for us. Any tips on picking a campsite online?

Also, at Kakabeka Falls, should I go with Fern's Edge, Whispering Hills, or Riverside campground? I like an isolated campsite (preferably where I can't see the campsite next door), with at least partial shade. A waterfront campsite is always nice, but of course not necessary.

The one thing I remember about the campground at Kakabeka is that some of the campsites are virtually next to the highway and you could hear the trucks going by all night. Make sure you request one as far from the highway as possible.

May be to late to post this now but Neys Provincal Park located close to Marathon Ontario(about a 3hr drive from Thunder Bay) is the best place I have ever camped. If you get a lakeside campsite you are very isolated and from your campsite is a trail to the amazing beach there. Neys also has a rich history, hiking trails canoeing etc. Its truely amazing, so while it is a little furthur it is well worth the scenic drive along the Northshore of Lake Superior. This link may also be a useful resource for you regardless of which campsite you plan on visiting http://www.nosta.on.ca/tourism_page_164.htm
