Best Time To Arrive For Jobs - Winter

I am planning on coming to Banff for the winter 2012/2013 for snowboarding

I have already posted a forum, then got reading a few others,

I notice some people are suggesting just to turn up and look for jobs (I have accommodation with a friend in Calgary which includes a car) instead of apply prior to leaving,

does anyone have any suggestions for me on this

I have Been told not to bother going through travel companies which help you secure a job before and also set you up completely.

I have a lot of experience in waitressing, nannying, bar work, kitchen work etc etc

so if this is the best way,

what time of year should I show up in order to jump on the best jobs?

early October?

If you want to work on hill come in early October. if you want to work in bars etc (easy money, espcially if you are easy on the eye!) come in early December. Don't waste money on one of those companies. Save the money for your season pass. If you are going to come get a season pass early to save money.

You might also consider coming in early February. If you're he to ski or ride, the snow conditions have improved and the season is nicely underway. Our season is so long, that there's frequently a high turnover - especially at the ski hills. At Sunshine Village for example, our winter season lasts until the 3rd week of May. Also, the local restaurants and bars are gearing up for the busiest part of the winter (mid-Feb to end of April) and may be looking to pick up an extra staff member. Working an evening job in a restaurant is one of the best jobs to have if you want to spend time at the ski hills. Also - you may think about working for a reservation agent like Discover Banff tours, Banff Adventures Unlimited or Skibig3. Working for Skibig3 would also get you a ski pass for the season! These companies also hire in advance, if you did want to come at the more traditional time of year (October).

thanks so much everyone for your help!

I think I will come in October and apply for jobs appon arrival!

Really looking forward to getting there, I cant wait to see what the (I am sure huge) difference is going to be between the mountains in Canada compared to Australia/New Zealand!

I am getting a 2 year Visa so will stay through till the end of the season =)

Would be a huge bonus to have a pass with my job, but I am expereinced in working in restuarants and bars, so if thats were the money is, and I get to spend more time boarding, might go for that =)

so I might look into getting the season pass early as "Roremc" suggested, hopefully I dont end up wasting my money and finding a job that provides me with a pass haha ;-)

thanks again!

Hi there, I found the advice people have given you on here really helpful as I am also planning to come to Banff for the 2012/13 season and am unsure about how to go about finding a job/accommodation etc.

What are you doing about finding a place to live? Will you be staying with your friend in Calgary or finding somewhere in Banff itself? I have started searching but not come up with anything as yet. Any advice on accommodation hunting would be much appreciated.

Welcome to TripAdvisor, Hayley! I think the link in response #1 may help you, too. It has info about the HI Banff's package for job-hunters.

Hey Hayley!

I have spoken to a few friends who went over there recently and they all say that its really easy to sort out the accommodation and jobs when you get over there as long as you show up in October, so I am no longer going to hunt for anything until I arrive =) it will be great to interview in person etc as well!

I am lucky enough to have my friend in Calgary as I will stay with her a bit while I am looking for Jobs and Accommodation, but I am also thinking I will stay at a hostel in Banff some of the time (haven’t looked into it much as I think I will just choose one when I get there) sometimes the jobs come with accommodation so there isn't much point in locking in your accommodation until you know where you are going to be working =)

I would recommend that you book in to stay at a backpackers when you first get there and then you can stay there until you find what you are looking for, you can search on this site and it also will give you reveiws of the places =) a lot of my friends lived in hostels and actually ended up working in them as well, plus they said that’s how they met a lot of people, which is ideally what I am going to need to do since I am traveling solo

hope that helps?
